Two Wins, Two Records Highlight Day 1 For Women's Swimmers at Big Al

PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania women's swimming & diving team had a solid start at the Big Al Invitational, winning two events and seeing two program records bettered including its longest-standing swim mark. The three-day event is being hosted by Princeton at the Tigers' DeNunzio Pool.

Penn swimmers went 1-2 in the 50 breaststroke, event, Amy Qin taking first place in 28.70 seconds and Kate Handley finishing second in 28.82 seconds. Penn had the top four swimmers in the event and six of the top seven. The Quakers kept to their winning ways in the 500 freestyle, Anna Moehn taking top honors in 4:43.58 which was an NCAA qualifying time. Sydney Bergstrom placed second in 4:45.02 as the Quakers took four of the top five and five of the top seven spots.

In the relay events, Penn started the night session with a second-place finish in the 200 free relay as the team of Kayla Fu, Amy Qin, Amber Smith, and Brianna Cong clocked 1:30.92. That time broke the longest-standing record in program history (1:31.48, set back in 2014) and was slightly more than a second off the winning time put down by Princeton (1:29.60). The Quakers concluded the night finishing second and third in the 400 medley relay as the team of Brianna Cong, Kate Handley, Kayla Fu, Amy Qin clocked 3:39.14 which was a mere 0.14 seconds off Princeton's winning pace.

The other record came in the 200 IM, where Katya Eruslanova lowered her program standard from 1:59.52 to 1:59.26 and took third while Erica Maltsev was fourth in 2:01.54.

Kate Levenson (24.98 seconds) and Margaret Hu (25.28) led a parade of Penn swimmers who finished second through sixth in the 50 backstroke event, taking second and third behind Princeton's Delaney Herr (24.45 seconds). As expected, the 50 freestyle event was a tight affair as Princeton's Sabrina Johnston won in 22.41 seconds, nipping Penn's duo of Kayla Fu (22.57) and Qin (22.72).
