Why Penn?

While Penn’s impressive scholar athletes will provide a variety of reasons why they chose the University of Pennsylvania, there are a few common themes – the first of which is the distinctly unique combination of opportunities that make Penn and Penn Athletics different than any other university on the world.

Certainly, the powerful combination of Ivy League academics, Division I athletics, in a vibrant urban campus with plenty of green space is compelling to make Penn one of the most desirable choices in the nation.  Yet very often we hear “it felt like home,” “it was the people at Penn, they were friendly and genuine,” and “the high powered combination of athletics and academics, and it was fun!”

Furthermore, Penn has always been an institution to provide the academic freedom to empower students to chart their own direction and aim big, pulling from fabulous nationally ranked programs in all academic disciplines.  Echoing back to founder Ben Franklin’s ideals of sound mind, sound body, better life – Penn and Penn Athletics combine to offer the very best of academic excellence, high powered Division I athletics which produce Ivy Champions, NCAA Champions, and Olympic Champions, all within a friendly and vibrant community.

The fact is, it is yours to decide!

Athletics

We are a source of inspiration for the entire Penn Community.  Our athletic scholars use character traits developed through training and competition to ensure they are well prepared to embrace life's challenges and forge a successful future.  The life of our athletic scholars is transformative, because of the people they meet and the experiences they share, forever altering their life's trajectory.

Financial Aid

Our need-based aid packages ensure that you receive four years of support to meet your full financial need.  In 2015 the University of Pennsylvania allocated $206 million to undergraduate financial aid and the average financial aid package for the incoming class was $48,605. Penn maintains a no-loan policy that makes it possible to graduate debt-free, practices need-blind admissions, and works with families to make sure that the cost of education is competitive with scholarship schools.

Admissions

“As a former Penn student-athlete and the father of young children, I value all that Penn Athletics strives to achieve for our student-athletes and fans of all ages. I enjoy meeting parents during the recruiting process to assure them that Penn coaches and staff are here to help champion their child’s life.” – Eric Furda, Dean of Admissions, University of Pennsylvania

Recruiting

Character first. Aiming big. Humility. Enjoyment. Community matters. These are the core values of Penn Athletics. They help define who we are as student-athletes, coaches and members of the Penn community. These are the values we look for in our prospective student-athletes – the values we look for in you!

Return on Investment

Penn’s world famous founder, Benjamin Franklin, stated, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”  Franklin’s practical innovation in education was revolutionary, as he proposed youth “…learn those things that are likely to be most useful and most ornamental.,” and this practical approach carries forward to this day.   Today Penn's graduates and alumni are afforded a tremendous array of opportunities in terms of professional choices, competitive preparation, and earning power.
