Recruiting Rules

?If a coach does not respond to your voicemail or email, it does not necessarily mean that they are not interested! As an NCAA Division I member, the University of Pennsylvania staff members are subject to a number of recruiting contact rules.

Telephone Calls –
As a general rule, coaches are not allowed to call recruits until September 1st at the beginning of his her or her junior year in high school. There are a few exceptions:

Swimming & Diving and Cross Country/Track & Field – Coaches are not permitted to call a recruit until July 1st following the completion of his or her junior year in high school
Effective August 1st 2016 – Cross Country/Track & Field coaches will be permitted to call a recruit on September 1st at the beginning of his or her junior year in high school

Football – One phone call may be made to a prospect from April 15th-May 31st of his or her junior year in high school. Additional calls may not be made before September 1st at the beginning of a prospect’s senior year of high school.

Men’s Basketball – Coaches are not permitted to call a recruit until June 15th after a prospects sophomore year in high school.

Women’s Basketball – Coaches are not permitted to call recruits during the July Evaluation Periods



Staff members may receive telephone calls placed by a prospective student-athlete at the prospect’s expense at any time.

Recruiting Materials/Emails:
As a general rule, coaches cannot provide recruiting materials, including e-mails to prospects until September 1st at the beginning of his or her junior year in high school. There are a few exceptions:

Men’s Basketball – Coaches are not permitted to send recruiting materials, including e-mails until June 15th at the conclusion of a prospect’s sophomore year.

Camp and clinic information may be provided at any time.

Swimming & Diving (Effective August 1st, 2016) – Coaches may send electronic correspondence to a prospect beginning July 1st following his or her junior year in high school
