PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track & field teams opened the indoor season this weekend, hosting the Penn Opener at the Jane and David Ott Center for Track and Field.
Both the men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon featured incredible performances by Penn's
Jake Rose,
Paul Park,
Amelia Kristen, and
Avery Elliott.
Men's Heptathlon
Junior
Jake Rose dominated the heptathlon with a personal best total of 5444 points. Rose recorded personal-best marks in all seven areas of the heptathlon placing first in the shot put (14.80m (48' 6.75")) and 60m H at 8.04.
His second-place finish in pole vault clearing 4.40m (14' 5.25") and third in the 60m (7.01) and long jump (6.59m (21' 7.5")) sealed his victory.
Paul Park secured third with 4876 points, setting new personal bests in the high jump (1.91m (6' 3.25")) and pole vault (3.90m (12' 9.5")).
Women's Pentathlon
Amelia Kristen and
Avery Elliott finished second (3686) and third (3287) in the pentathlon, respectively. Kristen starting the day strong placing second in the 60m H with a time of 8.89. Her third-place finish in shot put (10.27m (33' 8.50")) and long jump (5.44m (17' 10.25")) move her back into the top three with only the 800m left to run. Kristen took first in the 800m with an impressive 2:15.99.
Elliott's performance was highlighted by a high jump clearance of 1.64m (5' 4.50"), and a solid first place long jump distance of 5.67m (18' 7.25").
Sprints / Hurdles
Fore Abinusawa took gold in the women's 60m with an impressive 7.42 in the final, following her time of 7.43 in the prelims.
Jordyn Reed claimed second with a personal-best time of 7.62.
In the men's 60m dash,
Devante Heywood came in second clocking in at 6.88.
Ryan Matulonis came out on top in the men's 60m hurdles posting a personal-best time of 8.01 in the final.
Chikaodinaka Akazi finished 2nd in the women's hurdles, clocking in at a personal-best time of 8.55.
Nayyir Newash-Campbell led the men's 300m race finishing first with a time of 34.51.
Distance
Freshman
L'Mio Edwards made her season-debut winning the women's mile with a time of 4:48.93, edging out teammate
Bronwyn Patterson (4:49.89).
Chloe Hassman claimed third with a personal-best time of 4:52.33.
In the men's mile,
Edwin Klanke made a huge breakthrough, running a personal-best time of 3:59.84 to finish first among collegiate athletes. Freshman
Chris Larnard clocked in first in the men's 3000m at 8:22.98.
Nora Wollen led the women's team with a personal-best time of 9:43.19, finishing second.
Pole Vault
Penn went 1-2-3 in the women's competition with
Kai Eisenhardt leading the field at a personal-best height of 3.95m (12' 11.5"). Megan Hart took second, based on misses, and
Evangeline Thomson placed third (3.80m (12' 5.5").
Benedikt Sachta opened the season clearing 5.05m (16' 6.75") to take first place.
Jumps
Adannia Agbo,
Paris Ivery, and
Ijeoma Eziri claimed the top three spots in the women's triple jump on Saturday. Agbo fifth round mark of 12.50m (41' 0.25") ranks second in the league. Ivery jumped her way into second recording a personal-best mark of 12.34m (40'6"). Eziri took third at a distance of 11.94m (39' 2.25").
Takunda Mhete soared to 14.69m (48' 2.5") in round five of the men's triple jump to capture first place in his collegiate debut.
In the men's high jump,
Kampton Kam cleared the bar at 2.05m (6' 8.75") on his first attempt, finishing first.
Throws
Ella Neskkora and
Stella Inman kept the personal-best marks rolling in for the Quakers. Neskora recorded a fifth round mark of 16.65m (54' 7.5") to claim second, followed by Inman placing third at 15.91m (52' 2.5").
In the men's shot put,
Kai Deines placed second putting 16.09m (52' 9.5") in the final round of day.
