AKRON, Ohio – It was a third place showing for the University of Pennsylvania women's swimming and diving team after the first day of competition at the Zippy Invitational Thursday evening.
Only two events were contested – the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay – with the women scoring second in the 800 to enter the second day with a short lead over fourth place Oakland and a 10-point deficit to second place Buffalo.

*Penn led off the meet with a fifth-place finish in the 200 medley relay as
Amber Smith,
Izzy Pytel,
Vanessa Chong and
Margot Kaczorowski timed in at 1:42.34.
*The 800 freestyle relay went a little more swimmingly (no pun intended) as
Anna Moehn, Kaczorowski,
Anna Kalandadze and
Catherine Buroker missed out on the win by less than a second with a time of 7:16.34. Host Akron took first with a time of 7:15.67.
*Smith,
Abby Wickersham, Chong and
Bridget O'Leary registered 50 points after placing fifth at a time of 7:25.39.
*Akron leads the seven-team field with 230 points, followed by Buffalo at 196. Penn is third at 186 with Oakland chiming in with 178 points in fourth position. Ivy foe Cornell rounds out the top five with 170 points.

The individual events get underway on Friday with prelims beginning at 9 a.m. Diving, with prelims followed by Finals, begins at 1 p.m. The swim finals for the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay kick off at 6 p.m.
