PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Pennsylvania women's swimming and diving program wrapped up its third night at the Ivy League Championships. The Quakers sent six swimmers to 'A' finals today and surged to fourth place in the standings with 628.5 points.
Looking to defend her title in the 1,000 free,
Catherine Buroker looked poised to repeat as she went stroke-for-stroke with Princeton's Elli Marquardt through the first 500 yards. The Tigers' swimmer pulled away in the final 20 laps, developing a body-length lead in the last few laps.
The swim was one of Buroker's first in a fast suit this season, with the sophomore spending much of the season practicing for the U.S. Open and Olympic Trials. The hard work showed as she reset her program record and finished second with a 9:39.60 finish.
Two Quakers joined Buroker on the podium. Senior
Kaitlin Stearns finished sixth with a personal-best time of 9:52.05 while sophomore
Grace Giddings finished seventh after clocking in at 9:52.83.
A pair of Quakers qualified for 400 IM finals tonight.
Emma Holmquist finished fifth in the 'B' final with a time of 4:23.79 while
Anna Feng finished sixth in the 'C' final with a time of 4:29.15.
Myers clocked a personal best time in 100 fly in prelims (53.75) to qualify for the 'A' final. In the final, she raced to a seventh-place finish against a highly competitive field, clocking in at 54.12.
Monika Burzynska nearly reset her own program record in the 'B' final of the 100 fly. She led the pack with a first-place finish in the consolation final, clocking in at 53.53, just four-hundredths of a second from the program record she set at last year's Ivy Championships. Junior
Joanne Fu finished third in the 'B' final (53.89).
Penn's lone contestant in the 200 free final,
Mollie Westrick sprinted in the final 100 yards to take a second-place finish in the 'B' final. She touched the wall in a career-best time of 1:48.12.
A season-best time qualified
Rachel Maizes for the 100 breast 'A' final. She took seventh in the event, reaching the wall in 1:02.58.
Emily Layne finished second in the 'B' final with a time of 1:03.02.
Grace Estabrook led a trio of Quakers in the 'C' final, taking first place (1:03.57).
Serena Xue finished third (1:03.87) while
Emma Holmquist finished fourth (1:04.10).
The Quakers rounded out the individual events with a strong showing in the 100 back. After qualifying for the 'A' final,
Hannah Kannan snatched an NCAA 'B' Cut time with a fourth-place finish (53.94). Burzynska finished second in the 'C' final (56.02), while Larusso finished fifth (56.67).
The Quakers closed out the evening with some big relay points. A team of Kannan, Maizes, Fu, and
Margot Kaczorowski took fourth place with a 3:41.17 finish.
Penn now looks ahead to the final day of the Ivy League Championships with prelims in the 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, and 200 fly set to begin at 11 a.m. Finals for those races, as well as the 1,650 free, will start at 6 p.m.
