PROVIDENCE – Penn's bats were alive on Saturday, scoring 19 runs over the two games of a doubleheader with Brown. Unfortunately for the Red and Blue, Brown's offense was even more impressive, plating 27 runners en route to a sweep. The Bears won game one, 9-8, and took the second game, 18-11.
With the pair of loses, Penn's record drops to 10-14 overall and 0-6 in the Ivy League.
Penn took a 4-1 lead in the third inning of game one thanks to Dan Williams' grand slam over the left field fence. His big blast scored Steve Gable, Jeff Cellucci and James Mraz.
Mraz upped the lead to 5-2 in the fourth with a fielder's choice that scored Gable. The Penn half of the inning ended when Mraz was caught in an attempted steal of home with runners on the corners and two out.
The momentum for Brown carried over into its half of the inning as the Bears scored five runs. Steve Daniels countered Williams' grand slam with one of his own to center. It was his second home run in as many innings.
The Quakers got a run back in the top of the fifth when Mike Mariano scored Tom Grandieri with a sacrifice fly. Brown then scored two in the bottom of the inning when Rob Papenhouse knocked a two-run homer over the wall in left to give Brown a 9-6 lead.
Penn rallied for two runs in the sixth inning to get within a run, but went down in order in the seventh to end the game.
In game two, the Red and Blue fell behind early, as Reid Terry allowed five runs in the first inning. Matt Nuzzo drove in two with a double to center and then Papenhouse went deep again, this time a three-run shot.
Still, Penn crept back into the game with three runs in the top of the second. The first three batters reached, with William Gordon driving in Jeremy Maas with a single. A Derek Vigoa double scored Will Davis and Steve Gable plated Gordon with an RBI groundout to short.
Brown countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, all on home runs. Graham Tyler led off the inning with a solo homer. Four batters later, Pete Greskoff went yard off Patrick Brennan for two more runs.
In the third, a bases-loaded walk to Adrian Thomas scored Williams. Vigoa then drove in two more runs with a single up the middle to make the score 9-6.
In the sixth inning, Greskoff connected for his second home run of the game, this one a three-run homer. The home run made the score 13-7 in favor of Brown.
Still, Penn would not go quietly. In the seventh, Vigoa drove in his fourth run of the game with a single back through the box. The next batter, pinch hitter Matt Tellem, added two more runs with his first career home run, closing the gap to 13-10.
Brown scored three in the seventh and two in the eighth to put the game away.
The story of the day was Brown's power display. The Bears hit eight homers over the two games. Papenhouse had three over the course of the day and Daniels and Greskoff added two each.
For Penn, Vigoa was 4-for-8 over the two games with four RBI and two runs scored. Williams was 5-for-10 with five RBI and two runs scored. In game one, catcher Jeff Cellucci was 3-for-3 with two runs.
Penn is back in action on Sunday at Yale at noon for a doubleheader.
