PHILADELPHIA — Former Penn baseball standout Thomas Shurtleff '26 signed a free-agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels on Friday, July 17. Shurtleff will report to the Angels' training facility before being assigned to a minor league team.

Shurtleff made 56 appearances on the mound over his career as a Quaker, which ranks third all-time in the program's record book. Through his first two seasons in University City, the Medfield, Mass. native racked up 28 appearances—logging 44.0 innings with 49 strikeouts, a 3-0 record, and a save. As a junior, he made a career-high 17 appearances and emerged as a late-game weapon for head coach John Yurkow. Shurtleff's four saves that season were tied for the most among his Ivy competition, anchored by a month-long scoreless streak spanning 14.1 frames with 21 Ks and zero walks.

His final campaign in Red and Blue proved to be his finest as he became a high-volume arm in the rotation. Shurtleff registered career-best marks of four starts, 61.0 innings pitched, 52 strikeouts, six wins, and a 2.95 ERA while issuing just 15 walks to 253 batters faced. A two-time Ivy League Pitcher of the Week, he capped his senior year as a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection. Shurtleff saved his most impressive stretch for key conference matchups, putting together back-to-back dominant outings against Princeton (April 18) and Harvard (April 25) with 20 strikeouts while surrendering just two runs over 14.0 frames.

Shurtleff becomes the 17th player under Yurkow's tutelage to reach the professional ranks. He joins the likes of recent Quakers Noah Millikan, Ryan Dromboski, Wyatt Henseler, Eli Trop, Jackson Appel, and Joe Miller, among many others.
