Softball Set to Face Saint Joseph's Wednesday Night

PHILADELPHIA— The University of Pennsylvania softball team returns to action Wednesday evening against Saint Joseph's in a non-conference standalone game under the lights at Penn Park.

Honoring the Morgan's Message organization, the Quakers will wear t-shirts during warm-ups and will observe a moment of silence ahead of the game to bring awareness to mental illness and advocate for accessible treatment and resources for student-athletes.

About Morgan's Message
Morgan's Message is an organization founded in honor of Morgan Rodgers, a former Duke women's lacrosse player who lost her battle with mental health in 2019. The organization aims to bring awareness to mental health issues that student-athletes face and eliminate the stigma associated with the fight against mental illness. Through their hard work and dedication, Morgan's Message works tirelessly to amplify the stories of student-athletes, the resources available to them, and ensure that athletes' mental health is treated with the same level of care and compassion as their physical health.

Quaker Notemeal
Penn enters this matchup looking for its first win in three weeks. Holding a 2-29-1 record on the year, the Quakers hope to break their six-game losing streak ahead of their conference series at Cornell at the end of the week. In their last non-conference matchup against Villanova, the Red and Blue were able to put up twelve runs and hold on for a tie in extra innings. In their non-conference game the week prior, Penn defeated Drexel, 16-7 in five innings. With their recent struggles at the plate, the Quakers hope that they can get their bats moving again in a non-conference game.

Freshman Gigi Ganje leads the Red and Blue at the plate, earning a .319 batting average with 30 hits on the year. Junior Jade Montgomery has brought the power, leading her team with 6 home runs and 17 runs batted in. Montgomery also leads her team with a .799 OPS and .488 slugging percentage.

Previewing the Hawks
Saint Joseph's enters the game with a 21-19 overall record on the year, going 7-10 on the road. The Hawks are looking to rebound from a tough weekend at George Mason, going 1-2 with their last game ending in an extra-inning loss.

Saint Joseph's is led by senior Sarah Cancila, garnering a .310 batting average and is credited with 36 hits, 29 runs scored on the season. She also leads her team on the base path with 26 walks and 11 stolen bases, all contributing to her team-high .450 on-base percentage. The Hawks power hitter this year has been senior Sierra Fretz, hitting 9 home runs so far this season and earning a .620 slugging percentage and 1.053 OPS.

The Quakers will be looking for their first win over the Hawks since 2021, currently on a four-game skid in the matchup. In their meeting last year, Saint Joseph's topped Penn, 8-5 at the SJU Softball Field.
