PHILADELPHIA – Following a tremendous weekend at the plate in which the University of Pennsylvania baseball team swept Cornell on the road, sophomore outfielder
Gavin Collins was named Ivy League Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.
Collins led the Quakers offensively by hitting .667 (6-for-9) with a home run, double, five runs scored, and six RBIs. He slugged 1.111, walked four times and was hit twice, reaching base at a .750 clip. Collins totaled an OPS of 1.861 and has reached base in 15 consecutive games.
In a 4-3 victory over the Big Red in Game 1 Sunday, Collins went 2-for-2 at the plate with a homer, two walks, and three RBIs. His three-run jack gave the Quakers a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning.
His highlight performance came with a three-hit effort in Monday's win to seal the series sweep, driving in two runs on a double with two runs and a hit-by-pitch.
After a strong weekend, Collins now leads the Ivy League in hitting in conference play (.452). His overall batting average of .351 ranks third among Ancient Eight players and leads the team.
In addition to Collins' honor, freshman C
Ernie Echevarria and senior LHP
Will Tobin were tabbed to the Ivy's weekly honor roll.
Now two games ahead of Yale and Columbia for first place in the Ivy standings, Penn hosts the Bulldogs this weekend at Tommy Lasorda Field at Meiklejohn Stadium with a doubleheader Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and a single game noon Sunday. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with live stats provided.
