PHILADELPHIA – Senior
Matt Fallon is just days away from competing for his first national championship as he represents the University of Pennsylvania men's swimming and diving team at NCAA Championships in Federal Way, Wash. this weekend.
The Olympian and two-time All-America needs just that coveted national title that's eluded him the last three years to put the cherry on top of what has been a legendary career at Penn.
Fallon will compete in the 100 breaststroke on Friday and then his signature event, the 200 breast, on Saturday to wrap up the 2024-25 season.
He comes into the weekend the top overall seed in the 200 breast with a time of 1:48.83, the only sub-1:49 time in the nation this season. He's slotted just ahead of Virginia Tech's Carles Coll Marti (1:49.62), Brown's Jack Kelly, and Indiana's Josh Matheny (1:49.83) and Jassen Yep (1:49.93).
Fallon was the runner-up in this event last season, finishing just behind Arizona State's Leon Marchand with a time of 1:48.48. Marchand, of course, went on to win four gold medals for France at last summer's Olympic Games in Paris. In 2022, Fallon took third place in his first NCAA appearance as a freshman in Atlanta, swimming a 1:49.16 to place behind Minnesota's Max McHugh and Marchand.
Fallon is also seeded 21st in the 100 breast (51.46) and 55th in the 500 free (4:19.07).
He's looking to become Penn's first men's national champion since Chris Swanson in 2016 (1,650 free) and just the second in program history.
