PHILADELPHIA – Taking on a second consecutive nationally-ranked opponent, the University of Pennsylvania baseball team travels down south to battle No. 21 Troy for a three-game series this weekend at Riddle-Pace Field. It's the first time in program history the two teams are facing off.

The Quakers dropped the first three games of their 2025 campaign last weekend at No. 9 Florida State.

??Kicking off the new season on a high note, freshman right-handed pitcher Sebastian Haggard was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Monday after his performance Sunday against the Seminoles. He came out of the bullpen and pitched 2.1 shutout innings in his collegiate debut, allowing no runs, one hit, and had three strikeouts.

At The Plate
Two Penn hitters—Ryan Taylor (.444) and Gavin Collins (.300)—are batting over .300 for the Quakers to open the season. Taylor had four hits—with three doubles—in nine at bats, driving in one run. Collins had three hits, scoring two runs.

Gavin Degnan and Davis Baker hit the first two home runs of Penn's 2025 season on Saturday. Degnan's was the first hit of his Penn career.

On the Mound
Penn pitching has a team ERA of 12.27 through the season's first three games. However, the bullpen was solid on Sunday holding the Seminoles without a run for the final four frames.

Thomas Shurtleff, Marshall Mott, Connor Darling, John Cerwinski, and Haggard all had scoreless outings out of the bullpen this weekend.

Jake Moss was terrific in his appearance Sunday, striking out two over 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on two hits.

Scouting The Trojans
21st-ranked Troy steps into the weekend 8-1, with only close 7-6 loss against #25 Auburn on its ledger.

The Trojans played twice during the midweek this week, beating No. 15 Mississippi State, 6-5, in Starkville on Tuesday before taking down UAB, 7-4, at home on Wednesday.

Last season, Troy went 37-22 overall and dropped two games in the Sun Belt Tournament to Southern Miss and Appalachian State.

So far, six hitters are batting with averages over .300 including Sean Darnell (.424), Blake Cavill (.419), Steven Meier (.382), Mike Bello (.364), Brooks Bryan (.333), and Shane Lewis (.310). Lewis has a team-high five home runs this season so far.

Ahead of the season, Bryan was tabbed to the Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List. He and Cavill were both named to Perfect Game's Preseason Sun Belt All-Conference Team.
