PHILADELPHIA – Following the first weekend of the Ivy League season, the University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team swept the weekly awards slate with
Stina Almqvist earning Player of the Week and
Katie Collins named Rookie of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday afternoon.
For Almqvist, it's the second time she's been named Player of the Week in her career, while Collins is taking home of Rookie of the Week laurels for the fourth time this season.
Almqvist put together a standout, three-game week for the Quakers. She averaged 19.3 points per game and 7.0 rebounds per game while averaging 38.3 minutes in three starts. In a close loss to Big 12 opponent Arizona State on Monday, she scored a team-high 21 points in 39 minutes, shooting 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the field and was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
She poured in a career-high 28 points on 11 field goals, adding 10 rebounds for her third double-double in a victory over Benedictine Mesa on Tuesday.
Finally, Almqvist had nine points, seven boards, and four assists in Penn's Ivy-opening loss to Columbia on Saturday.
In 14 games this season, Almqvist is averaging 18.4 points per game—ranked second among Ivy League scorers—and has grabbed 7.9 rebounds per game as well.
Collins had another tremendous week, continuing upon her impressive freshman season. She averaged a double-double with 11.0 points and 10.3 rebounds, also adding 13 assists, five blocks, and four steals to her ledger. Collins opened the week with a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double at ASU on Monday while guarding center Nevaeh Parkinson. She also chipped in six assists with two blocks and a steal.
Against the Redhawks on Tuesday, Collins brought in 11 boards with seven points, and three assists to pick up the win. She nearly had her second double-double of the week against Columbia Saturday, scoring 10 points with nine rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and two steals at The Palestra.
Collins has started all 14 games this season for the Quakers, averaging 9.1 points and 8.2 rebounds while pacing the Ancient Eight in blocks with 28.
Penn remains home Saturday as Dartmouth comes to The Palestra for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Alumnae Day.
