PHILADELPHIA – 2023 graduate
Jackson Appel became the latest University of Pennsylvania baseball player to have his name called in the MLB Draft Monday afternoon. He was taken with the 169th pick in the sixth round by the Chicago White Sox.
Appel is the 24th different player in program history to be selected in the MLB Draft and just the fourth catcher—first since Matt O'Neill in 2019—to be taken. Appel is the highest drafted Quaker since Doug Glanville in 1991 (Round 1, Pick 12).
Before Appel spent his graduate year with national runner-up Texas A&M during the 2024 season, he put together a standout career in the Red and Blue for four seasons. In 2023, Appel was a first-team All-Ivy catcher, starting all 50 games and led the team in runs (50), triples (5), and walks (25) while helping Penn to the inaugural Ivy League Tournament title and first NCAA regional berth since 1995.
He threw out 39.3 percent (11-of-28) of attempted base stealers from behind the plate and totaled four homers with 41 RBIs.
In 2022, the switch-hitting catcher earned second-team All-Ivy laurels, starting 42 of the team's 48 games. He finished the year second on the team with a .346 batting average, 48 runs scored and 62 hits, adding seven homers.
This past year with the Aggies, Appel hit .331 over 65 games, totaling 78 hits with 10 homers, 16 doubles, and 41 RBIs. He was named a first-team All-America by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).
