PHILADEPHIA – The nationally recognized University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team moved to 2-0 in Ivy League play on Friday afternoon after shutting Cornell out 4-0 at the Hecht Tennis Center.
For the second straight match, Eileen Wang secured the win for the Quakers in the singles round after topping the Big Red's Jenny Wong.
#70 Penn opened the outing strong, with the dynamic pairing of Sabine Rutlauka and Wang silencing Lauren Stein and Wong 6-1. Maya Urata and Esha Velaga edged out Michelle Ryndin and Alexandra Savu 6-4 to clinch the doubles point to give the Red and Blue an early 1-0 lead.
Junior Rutlauka continued her hot pace to open singles, pushing Cornell's Ryndin out 6-3, 6-4 to bump the Quakers' lead to two points. Sophomore Urata won her 13th sixth slot bout of the season in two sets (7-5, 6-2) over Tanya Fan to bring Penn closer to victory at 3-0.
Junior Wang finished out the match with a three-set thriller over Wong to secure the Quakers' fourth straight victory. Wang faltered in the first set before tallying back-to-back 6-4 sets to push Penn to its second Ivy League win of the season.
