Softball Gears Up for Wednesday Matchup Against Villanova at Penn Park

PHILADELPHIA- The University of Pennsylvania softball team will round out its nonconference competition with a midweek matchup against Villanova at Penn Park.

The Quakers are 27-52-2 all-time against the Wildcats, with a 17-25-1 record at home. Villanova has taken the last two matchups, with the Red and Blue's latest victory in 2021, by a score of 4-2.

Previewing Penn
Penn went 1-3 last week, defeating Drexel in a midweek matchup (5-2) and then getting swept by Harvard Saturday and Sunday in Cambridge (7-0, 9-5, 7-5). Against the Dragons, Chloe Lesko and Delaney Smith launched back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first and Katie Reagan added a double. The Quakers added a run in the fourth and fifth innings when Sammy Fenton and Jade Montgomery had RBI singles. Throughout the week, Fenton went 6-for-13 (.462), collected four RBI, and scored a run. During game one of Sunday's doubleheader, Fenton highlighted her weekend with an inside-the-park homer, her first of the season.

At the Plate
Senior, Brianna Brown leads the team in batting average (.333), hits (34) and stolen bases (14). Reagan heads the lineup with 17 RBI and is second on the team in doubles and slugging-percentage. Fenton and Brown have scored a team-high 19 runs, while Lesko has 15. Fenton has added 31 knocks and Reagan is right behind with 29. With her home run against Drexel last week, Lesko posts a team-best three on the season, while Dana Anderson is slugging a team-high .468.

As a team the red and blue are batting .273, have compiled 248 hits, have scored 135 runs and have driven in 115. As a collective, the Quakers are slugging .357 and have an on-base percentage of .365, with 40 stolen bases.

In the Circle
In 19 appearances, Rachel Riley has made 16 starts and leads the staff with 79.0 innings pitched. The junior holds a 5.41 ERA a 1.77 WHIP and has struck out 18. Payton Bean has made 12 starts in 17 appearances and has tossed 59.1 innings. The junior leads the team in WHIP (1.60), complete games (3) and strikeouts (32) and has a 4.96 ERA. As a pitching staff, the Quakers hold a 5.19 ERA, have thrown 218.2 innings and have struck out 76 batters.

By the Numbers
Penn is ranked ninth in the country in double plays with 19, averaging .58 per game. Lesko sits at #39 in Division I with 23 walks and .70 per game. The Quakers sit third in the Ivy League in batting average and are second in the conference with 115 walks. Penn is fourth in the conference in hits, third in on-base percentage, fielding percentage and stolen bases.

Previewing Villanova
The Wildcats are coming off a sweep of DePaul last weekend in Chicago (7-0, 8-2, 8-3).

Lilly St. Jean leads Villanova in batting average (.361), OPS (1.060), slugging-percentage (.629) and is tied for first with 11 doubles. Tess Cites posts a team-best 46 hits and 43 runs, with a .341 batting average. Brooklyn Ostrowski leads the way with 10 homers. As a team the Wildcats are hitting .272, have scored 243 runs on 308 hits and 226 RBI. The team holds a .470 slugging percentage, 391 on-base percentage with 16 stolen bases.

In the circle, Caroline Pellicano leads the way with a 2.19 ERA in 25 appearances and four starts. The senior has tossed 67 innings, added 39 strikeouts, has five wins and six saves. Alyssa Seidler has a team-high nine wins with a 3.51 ERA in 16 starts. The senior leads the staff with 79.2 innings pitched and 91 strikeouts. As a staff, Villanova holds a 3.54 ERA in 278.2 innings, totaling 219 strikeouts.
