Softball Hosts Yale for Weekend Series; Will Honor Seniors on Sunday


PHILADELPHIA- The University of Pennsylvania softball team returns to Ivy League play this weekend with a three-game series against Yale at Penn Park.

The Quakers and Bulldogs will square off on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m. The series will conclude on Sunday, with a 12:30 p.m. first pitch.

Prior to Sunday's game, Penn will honor its seven seniors: Dana Anderson, Brianna Brown, Sammy Fenton, Jillian Kuntze, Julia Mortimer, Katie Reagan, and Olivia Szewczyk.

The Red and Blue are 34-57 against Yale all-time and 22-24 at home. Last season, the Bulldogs swept the series in New Heaven. In 2022, Penn took two-out-of-three at Penn Park.

Previewing Penn
Penn fell in its midweek matchup against Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, 8-5. The Quakers scored in the top of the first inning when Anderson singled to bring in Brown. The Hawks put up four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. In the top of the fifth, with the bases loaded, Reagan drew a walk, and Fenton was hit by a pitch to put the game within one, 4-3. Chloe Lesko then grounded out to second with the bases loaded, to bring in the tying run. The next at-bat, Mortimer singled up the middle to score Reagan, as the Quakers took a 5-4 lead. Saint Joseph's added two runs in the bottom of the fifth, and two runs in the bottom of the sixth, to ensure the 8-5 win.

At the Plate
Senior, and Philadelphia native, Reagan leads the team in batting average (.362), RBI (15), total bases (32) and is tied for first in triples (2). Brown heads the team with 26 hits and 13 stolen bases. Fenton and Brown are tied for first with 16 runs scored. Reagan has added 25 knocks, and Fenton is right behind with 24. Anderson and Lesko each have a pair of home runs to lead the team, as Anderson is slugging a team-high .469.

As a team the red and blue are batting .279, have compiled 201 hits, have scored 108 runs and have driven in 89. As a collective, the Quakers are slugging .358 and have an on-base percentage of .375, with 38 stolen bases.

Penn sits at second in the Ivy League in batting average and leads the conference with 99 walks. The Quakers are second in the conference in triples, stolen bases, and on-base percentage, and are fourth in runs scored.

In the Circle
In 15 appearances, Rachel Riley has made 13 starts and leads the staff with 68.0 innings pitched. The junior holds a 5.35 ERA a 1.75 WHIP and has struck out 16.  Payton Bean has made 10 starts in 13 appearances and has tossed 52.2 innings. The junior leads the team in ERA (4.25), WHIP (1.42), complete games (3) and strikeouts (30). As a pitching staff, the Quakers hold a 5.07 ERA, have thrown 172.2 innings and have struck out 67 batters.

Previewing Yale
The Bulldogs have won their last four games, including a sweep of Cornell last weekend. Against the Big Red, Yale took Saturday's games 4-2 and 9-8 (8 innings) and wrapped up the series with a 7-3 win on Sunday.

Willa Ferrer leads Yale in batting average (.341), home runs (5) and slugging percentage (.568). Libby Peoples leads the team with 21 runs scored and is tied for first with Isabella Fortini with 34 hits. Sophie Woodridge heads the lineup with 23 RBI. As a team, the Bulldogs are batting .272, have 243 hits, 20 home runs, have scored 148 runs and have driven in 138.

Emma Taylor leads the pitching staff with a 2.81 ERA in 24 appearances and 18 starts. The sophomore has a 9-7 record, leading the team with 112 innings pitched and 68 strikeouts. As a staff, Yale has a 4.70 ERA, 1.67 WHIP, 225 innings pitched, and have struck out 99 batters.
