Playing in the Palmetto State
This weekend will mark Penn's third consecutive series in South Carolina after taking on USC Upstate last weekend and Charleston Southern during the week. So far, Penn is 2-4 over six games on the Spring Break trip.
Â
At The Plate
Nick Spaventa (.361),
Davis Baker (.324) and
Connor Chavez (.324) are all hitting north of .300 through nine games to begin the season.
Â
Spaventa leads the team in hits with 13, while
Wyatt Henseler has an Ivy League-leading five home runs with 12 RBI. Only Henseler (1.063) and Spaventa (1.036) have a four-digit OPS.
Â
Baker's reached-base streak is up to nine consecutive games, while Spaventa's is at eight.
Â
Penn had the long ball working against the Buccaneers on Wednesday, hitting three homers in the late innings. The Quakers have had a trio of three-homer efforts through the first nine games of the year, the most in a span to start a campaign in at least 11 seasons.
Â
On The Mound
Starting pitching hasn't been what it was throughout most of last year for the Quakers, as weekend starters
Ryan Dromboski (0-1, 18.00 ERA),
Cole Zaffiro (0-1, 7.00) and
John Cerwinski (0-1, 14.40) have allowed a combined 27 earned runs with 18 strikeouts and 19 walks.
Â
Carson Ozmer has been a bright spot for the staff, going 1-0 with an 0.00 ERA and eight strikeouts over 5.1 innings of work.
Â
The All-Time Series
Penn is 2-0 in the all-time series against CofC, after sweeping the series on the road back in 2022. In the Quakers' series-clincher, Zaffiro threw four innings with five strikeouts.
Â
Scouting The Cougars
Charleston enters the weekend with an overall record of 8-3, all at home. The Cougars began the season on a seven-game winning streak with sweeps against Marshall and Youngstown State.
CofC defeated Liberty, 8-2, in a midweek contest at Patriots Point on Tuesday.
Â
At the plate, they are led by Kevin Madden (.419), Tyler Sorrentino (.346), Cole Singsank (.333) and Avery Neaves (.314). Trotter Harlan has a team-high three home runs and is tied for the RBI lead (10) with Cole Mathis.
Â
Charleston's pitching has been electric to begin the season, boasting a CAA-best 2.61 ERA on the bump. That number is the seventh-best total in NCAA Division I so far. The staff is led by arms Jake Brink (2-0, 0.96 ERA), Aidan Hunter (1-0, 1.29), Alex Lyon (0-1, 1.59) and Connor Campbell (2-0, 1.89). Lyon is ranked third in D1 in WHIP (0.53). Reliever Emmett Bice leads the Cougars with 18 strikeouts.
