PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team left Old Nassau with a 4-3 victory over #48
Eileen Wang clinched the match in the #4 singles slot off a three-set thriller over Alice Ferlito to secure Penn its first win over Princeton since 2008.
The Red and Blue brought a 1-0 lead into singles after grabbing the doubles points from victories in the first two slots. Sabine Rutlauka and Wang started the dual off strong with a 6-1 bout over Eva Elbaz and Leena Bennetto. Esha Velaga and Maya Urata gave Penn the one-point lead off a 6-2 win over Maia Sung and Madeleine Jessup to wrap up the doubles round.
Junior Rutlauka opened singles with a quick 6-2, 6-3 win over Princeton's Bennetto in the second slot to bump the lead to 2-0. The Tigers struck back in the #5 and #6 slots to tie the match at two. Princeton kept its streak going, taking the third slot contest as well to take a 3-2 lead.
The final two bouts were three-set fights that carried Penn past Princeton. Freshman Velaga rallied 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 against her sister Neha Velaga to knot the battle up at three. Junior Wang battled back in her dual with Ferlito, dropping the first set 3-6 before winning the next two 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to secure the Quakers' first Ivy League win of the season and first over the Tigers since the 2008 campaign.
