PHILADELPHIA – The nationally ranked University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team closed non-conference action with a shutout 7-0 victory over Temple at home on Friday afternoon.
Penn shut the Owls out in doubles and singles action to move to 12-5 on the season.
The red-hot duo of Sabine Rutlauka and Eileen Wang opened the match with a 7-5 victory over Samantha Nanere and Marianthi Christoforidou, followed by a 6-3 win from Esha Velaga and Maya Urata to clinch the doubles points and push the Quakers ahead 1-0 heading into singles.
Junior Rutlauka opened singles with a quick 6-1, 6-1 #win over Sena Takebe to double the Quakers' lead. Freshman Velaga kept the momentum going in the first slot, edging Samantha Nanere out 6-3, 6-1 to push the deficit to 3-0.
Sophomore Maya Urata clinched the victory in the sixth slot, downing Evie Wei 6-0, 6-4 to land the Red and Blue their final non-conference win of the season. Iris Gallo, Gavriella Smith, and senior Wang won their bouts against the Owls to secure the clinched win for Penn.
