DELAND, Fla. – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team closed its spring break road trip with a statement 4-3 win over Stetson University on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Eileen Wang clinched the 4-3 win for Penn with a three-set thriller over Stetson's Alanna DiFrancesco.
After the Hatters clinched the doubles round to lead 1-0, the Quakers caught a spark to open singles, as freshman Esha Velaga defeated Cheri Darley 6-4, 6-2 in the #1 slot to tie the contest at one. The back-and-forth continued as Stetson won the fourth slot before sophomore Maya Urata retaliated in her contest with Noa Cohen, winning 6-2, 6-2 to notch the match at two.
Junior Gavriella Smith pushed Penn into the lead at 3-2 off a three-set win over Nadya Maslova, dropping the first set 6-7 and then winning back-to-back 6-3 sets to claim the battle. The Hatters answered in the fifth slot to even things out to put the match on the line in the #3 slot.
Wang opened the third slot bout taking the first set 7-6, but Stetson's DiFrancesco answered in set two with a 6-4 decision. Wang prevailed in set three, winning 6-3 to clinch the 4-3 win for the Red and Blue.
