Women’s Tennis Has Strong Outing at Cissie Leary Invitational

 
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team had a strong outing this weekend, hosting Columbia, Delaware, Drexel, Princeton, South Florida, Syracuse, and Temple for the 26th annual Cissie Leary Invitational at the Hamlin and Hecht Tennis Courts.

Penn faced many opponents throughout the three days, taking on USF in doubles and Syracuse in singles on Friday; Drexel in both singles and doubles on Saturday; and USF and Delaware in doubles and the Blue Hens, Princeton, and the Bulls in singles on Sunday.  
 
The Quakers best showing of the weekend was against Drexel, as they took two-of-three doubles matchups and five-of-six singles matchups. Esha Velaga and Maya Urata won the top slot in doubles against the Dragons, 6-2, while Eileen Wang and Iris Gallo took the second slot victory, 6-4. Junior Gavriella Smith won the first slot in the singles match, taking the first round, 6-4, then the second, 6-1. 
 
The Red and Blue also swept their singles matches against Delaware on Sunday, with Velaga, Wang, and freshman Liza Tkachenko all grabbing wins against the Blue Hens.

The Quakers are on the road next weekend, heading to the ITA All-American Championships starting on Saturday in Cary, N.C.
