Field Hockey Announces 2023 Campaign

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania field hockey program is excited to announce the 2023 schedule, sporting six opponents ranked in the final top 25 for 2022 and the reigning national champions. The 2023 campaign will also mark the inaugural year of the four-team Ivy League Tournament.

"Ivy League field hockey couldn't be more excited for the inaugural Ivy League Tournament," said Head Coach Colleen Fink. "Our staff has thoughtfully crafted a competitive schedule, as in past years, to best prepare us for tournament play as well as give us the best opportunity to have a strength of schedule that is NCAA Tournament caliber. Our team has collectively decided that challenge is the best path toward progress, so we continue to test ourselves and grow from game to game. Ivy League field hockey continues to be in the top 3 conferences, and we are excited to continue to showcase Penn amongst the exceptional teams."

As Fink stated, the Quakers will open the year hosting the annual ACC-Ivy League Crossover which includes Princeton, Louisville, and 2022 national champion North Carolina, all three programs that ranked in the top 12 of the final rankings last year. Penn will start the year on Friday, September 1 against UNC before taking on Louisville on September 3.

The Quakers continue a four-game homestand to open the campaign with Georgetown and Drexel the following weekend. Penn is meeting the Hoyas for the first time since 2005 while holding an unblemished 5-0 tally in the series. It will look to bounce back against the Dragons, falling on the road last season, 2-1, but still maintaining a 12-7 advantage in the all-time matchup.

Penn hits the road for the first time on September 16, playing back-to-back days in Evanston, Illinois against Indiana and Northwestern. The Quakers are lined up for the first game in program history against the Hoosiers. The Wildcats, a national powerhouse, hold a 2-0 record over the Quakers but Penn has battled in both matchups with one-goal losses including last year when the Quakers led through part of the game at Ellen Vagelos Field.

The non-conference slate will also include two more Philadelphia rivals in Saint Joseph's and Villanova, and the regular season is capped off with a trip to Delaware, a squad they tackled last year, 4-1, for the first time since 2007.

The Ivy League season starts up on Friday, September 22, hosting Yale. The Quakers will also take on Dartmouth (Oct. 7) and Brown (Oct. 28) at Ellen Vagelos Field.

For the first time in conference history, the Ivy League will have a four-team tournament the first weekend in November at the overall top seed with the winner earning the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
