Record Low Scores Rule as Women's Golf Finishes Play at NCAA Regional

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The University of Pennsylvania women's golf team completed play at the NCAA Regional on Wednesday afternoon, finishing exactly where it was seeded (11th) in a 12-team field. After shooting 306 on both Monday and Tuesday, the Quakers shaved eight strokes off their team score in Wednesday's final round with a 298. That was the best score in program history in NCAA competition and left the Red and Blue at 46-over-par 910 for the tournament, which was played on the par-72 Champion course at the PGA National Resort.

Michigan State led the regional wire-to-wire and earned the team title with a three-round score of 872. The Spartans thus advance to the NCAA Championship—which will run May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.—and will be joined by Duke (875 score at the regional), Northwestern (878), Texas (878), and LSU (879, one shot ahead of sixth-place Arkansas). Miami's Sara Byrne also advanced to the NCAA Championship as the low individual not from an advancing team, finishing third overall behind MSU's Brooke Biermann and LSU's Latanna Stone.

Playing their final collegiate rounds wearing the Red and Blue, seniors Selina Li and Susan Xiao led the way on Wednesday. Xiao had three birdies across her last 10 holes and ended the day at even-par 72, the lowest round by a Penn player in NCAA competition in program history. She ended the tournament at 16-over-par 232, third in the lineup and tied for 51st overall. Li, meanwhile, carded her second 2-over-par 74 of the week and ended the tournament as Penn's low scorer at the Regional with a score of 9-over-par 225. That left her tied for 33rd overall in a field of 66 golfers.

Freshman Julie Shin finished the week second among Penn players and tied for 41st overall with a score of 13-over-par 229, while sophomore Natalie Cao (2-over-par 74) and freshman Bridget O'Keefe (78) were the Quakers' other scorers on Wednesday. Both Cao and O'Keefe finished the week at 17-over-par 233, one shot behind Xiao.
