Baseball Heads to New Orleans, Wraps Spring Break With Tulane Series

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team wraps its Spring Break trip this weekend with a three-game set against Tulane.
 
Penn comes into the weekend 3-5 on the season, 3-2 on the Spring Break trip after a series win over Lamar and a series split with Nicholls State Tuesday and Wednesday night.

The Series: Tulane
This weekend will mark the first-ever games between the two programs.

Game 1: Owen Coady (1-1, 3.97 ERA, 11.1 IP) vs. Dylan Carmouche (0-2, 4.60 ERA, 15.2 IP
Game 2: Cole Zaffiro (0-1, 6.00 ERA ERA, 9.0 IP) vs. Cristian Sanchez (0-3, 12.19 ERA, 10.1 IP)
Game 3: Ryan Dromboski (0-1, 2.35 ERA, 7.2 IP) vs. Ricky Castro (2-1, 2.87 ERA, 15.2 IP)

Penn Last Time Out
Penn won 5-4 on Wednesday night at Nicholls State, earning a series split with the Colonels. Eight starters hit safely as the offense registered a season-high 14 hits, including five extra-base hits.

Wyatt Henseler launched his second home run of the season, a two-run shot. Jackson Appel had an RBI single and Davis Baker added an RBI double, the fifth time in six starts he's hit safely.

Freshman John Cerwinski earned the win in his first appearance as a Quaker, a 2.1 inning effort with three strikeouts. Eli Trop earned the save after striking out the side in the ninth on just 12 pitches.

Scouting Tulane
The Green Wave lost 10 of their first 11, are 1-6 at home, and 0-6 in games decided by three runs or fewer this season.

Brennan Lambert (.360) and Brady Hebert (.344) are the two everyday players on the team hitting over .300. Six of Lambert's 18 hits have gone for extra bases; Hebert leads the team with an OPS of 1.057. Jackson Linn is hitting just .222, but four of his 12 hits have been home runs.

Ricky Castro has a 2.87 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in three starts this inning, going at least five innings and increasing his strikeout total each time out. Dylan Carmouche has a team-high 18 strikeouts in 15.2 innings across his three starts this season; he set season highs with six innings and eight strikeouts against St. John's on February 24.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
.357 • After recording just 10 hits in 44 at-bats last season, Calvin Brown has started 2023 with seven hits in 20 at-bats, good for a (team-leading) .350 batting average.

75 • Penn pitchers have struck out 75 batters through eight games, one more than their eight-game total from last season when they set a program-record with 484 strikeouts. Eight Quakers are averaging at least one strikeout per inning pitched.

1.06 • With seven scoreless innings to open the season, senior reliever David Shoemaker has lowered his career ERA by more than a full run.

15.3  Dromboski has struck out 13 batters this season in just 7.2 innings of work, a K/9 rate of 15.3 (for comparison, no Major League pitcher had a K/9 rate over 12).

170 • Saturday's win over Lamar was the 170th win at Penn for  W. Joseph Blood Head Coach John Yurkow, good for third in program history. Yurkow trails only Bob Seddon (634 wins) and Walter Cariss (309 wins).
