Baseball Continues Spring Break Trip With Midweek Series at Nicholls State

THIBODAUX, La. – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team continues its Spring Break trip through the south with a back-to-back night games at Nicholls State Tuesday and Wednesday.
 
Penn enters the matchup with a 2-4 record after taking two of three from previously unbeaten Lamar over the weekend.

The Series: Nicholls State
The series will mark the first-ever games between the two programs.

Penn Last Time Out
Penn won at Lamar last Friday and Saturday to claim the series, missing out on the sweep on Sunday. Owen Coady took a perfect game into the sixth inning on Friday, finishing his day allowing just one (unearned) run and one hit over seven innings. On Saturday, Wyatt Henseler had a pair of extra-base hits and four RBI, including the game-winning home run in the top of the 10th inning. 
Coady was named Ivy League Pitcher of the Week on Monday for his remarkable outing.

Scouting Nicholls State
The Colonels are 8-5 this season, with a 7-2 mark at home, coming off a series win over Memphis last weekend. The team has scored four runs or fewer in six games this season, going 1-5 in those six contests.

Edgar Alvarez has hit safely in 11 of his 12 starts and leads the team with a .362 batting average, 12 runs scored, and an OPS of 1.061; he's also tied for the team lead with nine RBI. Xane Washington is right behind Alvarez with a .360 average; he's had four multi-hit games in his last six starts.

Cade Evans has not allowed a run in five relief appearances totaling 8.1 innings this season. Arturo Rodriguez has gone 8.0 innings over four relief appearances, also without allowing a run.

QUAKER NOTEMEAL
.357 • After recording just 10 hits in 44 at-bats last season, Calvin Brown has started 2023 with five hits in 14 at-bats, good for a (team-leading) .357 batting average.

1.06 • With seven scoreless innings to open the season, senior reliever David Shoemaker has lowered his career ERA by more than a full run.

9 • Penn stole two more bases over the weekend, giving them nine through their first six games. The team did not record its ninth steal until the 11th game of the season in 2022. Additionally, this marks the first time in more than a decade the team has recorded nine steals through six games.

15.3 • Ryan Dromboski has struck out 13 batters this season in just 7.2 innings of work, a K/9 rate of 15.3 (for comparison, no Major League pitcher last season had a K/9 rate over 12).

170 • Saturday's win over Lamar was the 170th win at Penn for  W. Joseph Blood Head Coach John Yurkow, good for third in program history. Yurkow trails only Bob Seddon (634 wins) and Walter Cariss (309 wins).
