Softball Opens Spring Break at Owl Classic

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team is spending spring break in the Sunshine State, traveling to Florida for the Owl Classic. The three-day classic will take place in Boca Raton, Fla. The Quakers will play five games over three days beginning on Friday, March 3rd with games against Texas State and Winthrop at 9:00 a.m. The Red and Blue will face Texas State, Winthrop, Oakland, Florida Atlantic, and Illinois State. Penn will play a single game against each team.

Previewing Penn
The Quakers opened their season last weekend at the Wolfpack Classic hosted by NC State. While the overall record is 0-5 the Red and Blue have a lot of positives to build on. 
 
Dana Anderson, Madison Bauerle, and Sammy Fenton lead the team with five hits each. Anderson leads the team with a .455 average, five RBI and eight total bases. 
 
Three Quakers have hit home runs on the season as Anderson, Bella Fiorentino, and Julia Mortimer all hit their homers on opening day. 
 
In the opening weekend the Quakers strong defense helped a struggling pitching staff. Katie Raegan made a few warning track catches to prevent extra base hits and prevent runs. 

Previewing the Bobcats

Texas State is coming off a 6-0 weekend at the TXST Classic. Five of the Bobcats' six wins were decided by one run as the held on for the wins.
 
Seven bobcats have recorded hits in their last game against UTA. Ciara Trahan led the team with three hits and Hannah Earls also had multi hits. Five others also recorded a hit. Earls extra inning base hit drove in the winning run

Penn and Texas State will open the Owl Classic at 9 a.m. on Friday. 
 
Previewing the Eagles
Penn (0-5, 0-0 Ivy League) vs. Winthrop (10-3, 0-0 Big South)

Winthrop opened the season with four straight wins and are 4-1 in its last five games at the Winthrop Garnet & Gold Tournament. They beat all four teams they played as they split the two games against Harvard and defeated NC Central, LIU, and Fordham. In the victory over Harvard, Winthrop used a three run third inning and held off a late raly by the Crimson for the 3-2 victory. The third inning was very productive for the Eagles, as they scored a 10 of 19 total runs in the third inning.

Oakland is enjoying a 12-game road swing in the state of Florida to open the 2023 season. A the Spring Games, they split the first four games with a run-rule win and a loss. After wins over UT Martin and Valparaiso in Madeira Beach they began their trip south to Ft. Myers for a pair at FGCU. The Eagles swept both ends of the doubleheader. Allisa DiPrima leads the team with a .450 average and nine hits. DiPrima is one of two with a triple on the team. 
 
Previewing the Owls

The Owls are coming of a 4-1 showing at the inaugural Joan Joyce Classic.  The Owls picked up win against Villanova, North Carolina, and Boston College. The weekend ended with a 2-0 shutout of UNC for their second victory of the weekend over the Tar Heels. Gabby Sacco earned her third win of the tournament as she tossed a seven inning four-hit shutout. 
 
FAU will face Penn in their fourth match on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
 
Previewing the Redbirds
Penn (0-5, 0-0 Ivy League) vs. Illinois State 3-11, 0-0 The Valley)

The Redbirds are coming out of the Hilltopper Spring Fling 2023 with a 1-4 record in the tournament with losses to Central Michigan, Western Kentucky twice, and Jacksonville state on their first time meeting. Their only win came against Jacksonville State on their second time meeting with a 10-0 score. Illinois State came out firing with two runs in the first inning and followed by four more in the third and two more in the fourth and fifth inning to run rule the Gamecocks in five innings. Delainey Bryant and Emme Olson led the Redbirds with three runs each. Abby Knight, Jayden Standish Kaili Chval, and Dayna Kennedy helped secure the win with one run scored each. 
 
The Redbirds will face off against Texas State to start on Friday and face Penn at 8 a.m. and FAU at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.

*In stolen bases, Penn is 3-for-4 in five games to open 2023, with Brianna Brown leading  the pack going 2-for-2.
*64% of the players for Penn have above a .200 SLG%, with Dana Anderson and Bella Fiorentino having an average higher than .700%.
