Eaise Takes Conference Pitcher of the Year, Headlining Ten All-Ivy Selections For Baseball

PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League released its All-Ivy teams and major award winners Thursday afternoon and the University of Pennsylvania was represented remarkably well, totaling ten honorees, including six first-team selections, four of them unanimous.

Kevin Eaise was the headliner of the group, earning unanimous Pitcher of the Year honors. Eaise was joined on the first team by fellow unanimous selections Cole Palis (second base), Wyatt Henseler (third base), and Andrew Hernandez (designated hitter). First baseman Ben Miller and starting pitcher Joe Miller rounded out the Quakers' first team honorees.

Catcher Jackson Appel and outfielder Nate Polo garnered second team honors, with shortstop Craig Larsen and relief pitcher Owen Coady earning honorable mention recognition for the Red and Blue.

Notes to Know…
  • Eaise is the second straight Penn hurler to take home Pitcher of the Year honors; Christian Scafidi won the award back in 2019, the last full Ivy League season.
  • Penn's 10 All-Ivy selections are the Quakers' most since 2010, when they also tallied 10 honorees.
  • The Quakers' six first-team selections were twice as many as any other team; both Dartmouth and Columbia produced three first-team honorees.
Kevin Eaise: Ivy League Pitcher of the Year; Unanimous First-Team All-Ivy; Academic All-Ivy
Eaise was dominant throughout the duration of conference play, going at least five innings against each of the seven Ivy League opponents, earning the win in all seven of those starts. He was the only starting pitcher to win more than four conference games, and finished third in ERA (3.05), strikeouts (51) and batting average against (.227). Eaise struck out at least six batters in six of his conference starts and never walked more than four batters in a game.

Wyatt Henseler: Unanimous First-Team All-Ivy
One of five players to start all 48 games for the Quakers, Henseler got off to a slow start in conference play, going hitless in his first eight at-bats, but the super sophomore got back on track quickly, finishing the year with a .337 batting average, a .445 on-base percentage, and a .565 slugging percentage in conference play, with 15 of his 31 hits going for extra bases; Henseler was also hit by a pitch 11 times, three more than any other player in Ivy action.

Cole Palis: Unanimous First-Team All-Ivy
Also starting 48 games for the Quakers, Palis hit .313 in conference play, 50 points higher than his season average. He registered at least one multi-hit game in every conference series, finishing with nine in all, as well as five multi-RBI games. Palis finished Ivy play with a .434 on-base percentage, drawing 16 walks (T-3rd among all players), and a .475 slugging percentage, with nine of his 25 hits going for extra bases.

Andrew Hernandez: Unanimous First-Team All-Ivy
Hernandez battled a thumb injury much of the season and barely played in half the conference games but was a force to be reckoned with in that limited action, hitting .409 and slugging .682 in 11 conference starts. The senior registered five multi-hit efforts in those 11 games, with 10 of his 19 hits going for extra bases, including four doubles during the Quakers' series win over Yale at the end of April.

Joe Miller: First-Team All-Ivy
The league leader in strikeouts in conference play (62), Miller teamed with Eaise for a formidable 1-2 punch at the top of the Penn rotation. The southpaw's 48.2 innings pitched, 3.70 ERA and .233 batting average against ranked second, sixth, and fourth, respectively, among all pitchers in Ivy play. Miller went at least six innings in five conference starts, recording three double-digit strikeout games, including 14 against Princeton, the most strikeouts in a game this season by any Ivy hurler.

Ben Miller: First-Team All-Ivy
Miller was at his best in conference play in 2022 as he hit .388, 58 points above his season average, good for fourth among all hitters, with his 1.128 OPS good for sixth. Miller hit safely in each of the first nine conference games and scored at least one run in seven of those contests. He registered 11 multi-hit games and was one of just 10 players with at least 20 runs and 20 RBI in conference play.

Jackson Appel: Second-Team All-Ivy
One of the best pure hitters in the conference, Appel hit safely in each of his first 12 conference games and 16 of his first 17. The junior, who worked his way to the top of the Quaker lineup during the season, hit .355 in Ivy play with 28 runs (T-2nd in conference) and 61 total bases (3rd in conference), thanks in part to seven home runs (3rd in conference).

Nate Polo: Second-Team All-Ivy
After starting Ivy action just 4-for-23, Polo caught fire down the stretch, going 12-for-23 over the final seven conference games, hitting safely in all seven of those games, including three multi-hit efforts. In the final series of the year against Princeton, Polo hit .545 (6-for-11) with five RBI and three runs scored, raising his season average 48 points.

Owen Coady: Honorable Mention All-Ivy
Coady made eight appearances out of the bullpen in Ivy action for the Quakers and was utterly dominant for much of that stretch, including a run of 17 consecutive innings over four appearances in April, during which time he allowed just three runs on 10 hits while walking six and striking out 24 batters. For the year, Coady was second in the conference in batting average against (.225) and led all relievers in strikeouts (41) and wins (five) in conference play.

Craig Larsen: Honorable Mention All-Ivy
The final piece of the Quaker infield who started all 48 games together, Larsen hit safely in 18 of 21 conference games, including each of the last seven. The senior hit .355 in Ivy play with a .410 on-base percentage and a .505 slugging percentage. In a weather-shortened weekend at Harvard in early April, Larsen recorded six hits in 12 at-bats with three homers, six RBI, and six runs scored, nabbing conference Player of the Week honors.
