Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The University of Pennsylvania softball team rallied in the seventh inning of an 11-8 loss at Harvard on Monday afternoon. The Quakers scored three in the seventh to cut the deficit to just three but ultimately fell short in their comeback bid.
GAME 1: Harvard 11, Penn 8
Brianna Brown and
Laurel McKelvey opened the game with back-to-back base hits. Penn took a lead on a base hit by
Bella Fiorentino that scored Brown from second.
Harvard responded in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out two run shot over the right field wall to take a 2-1 lead.
Julia Longo worked around a few runners in second inning to keep it a one run deficit.
In the top of the third inning,
Sarah Schneider hit her Ivy leading ninth home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2.
Harvard would load the bases in the bottom of the third but Longo used a crucial strikeout to get out of the inning unscathed.
Fiorentino came up with one out in the top of the fifth inning with two runners on and sent a 3-1 pitch to dead center field to give Penn a 5-2 lead.
The Crimson rallied to put across eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 10-5 lead. They then added another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 11-5.
Penn put together its own rally in its final at bat as
Emma Nedley drove in two runs on a hit to center field.
Nedley then came around to score on a base hit up the middle by
Ashley Waco.
Quaker Notemeal
- Penn hit two more home runs on Monday bringing its season total to 24. Sarah Schneider hit a solo shot in the third inning to tie the game at 2-2 and then Bella Fiorentino hit a three-run shot in the top of the fifth to give Penn a 5-2 lead. S. Schneider hit her ninth home run of the season and Fiorentino hit her third home run of the season.
- Brown and Fiorentino both went 2-for-4 at the plate as Brown scored two runs and Fiorentino drove in four runs with a base hit and a home run.
