Box Score SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Penn Softball dropped another run-rule contest today as it fell 9-0 at Cal Poly. The Mustangs touched up Penn pitching for four runs in the first to take a lead they would never relinquish. Penn falls to 2-11 on the season.
Cal Poly 9, Penn 0 (5 innings)
Payton Bean made the start for Penn and was quickly chased from the game as she five batters in the first inning giving up three hits and allowing two runs.
Bella Fiorentino came in in relief and walked her first batter on four pitches. She got the second out of the inning as she drew a fielders choice getting the lead run out. On the next batter the Mustangs plated two more runs on an error by the Quakers centerfielder.
Katie Reagan get Penn's first and only hit of the game in the top of the second but was unable to score any runs.
Fiorentino had a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the second as she got three ground outs to put a zero on the board.
The first three batters reached in the bottom of the third on back-to-back singles up the middle and loaded the bases with a walk. Fiorentino got a line out to second for the first out but next batter doubled down the right field line to bring home two more runs.
Julia Longo came in to get the final two outs of the third inning to limit the damage to just two runs but Cal Poly's lead grew to 6-0.
The Mustangs added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on three hits to go up 9-0.
The Quakers did not go down easy in the final inning as Reagan reached on a fielding error by the shortstop and then
Brianna Brown drew a one-out walk.
Madison Bauerle walked with two out to load the bases but a strikeout of Fiorentino was the final out of the game.
Penn used three pitchers in the game as each pitcher gave up three hits and combined for four walks and just one strikeout.
QUAKER NOTEMEAL
- The struggles continue for Penn as it has been shutout for the third time in six games. Four of which have been five-inning run-rule losses.
- Over the last seven games, the Penn offense has struggled to produce with runners on. They have just eight hits in 44 at bats with runners in scoring position and are 0-and-8 with the bases loaded. With two outs they have scored just four runs on 17 two-out hits.
The Quakers west coast trip comes to an end tomorrow in Los Angeles for a pair of games at UCLA against Loyola Marymount and UCLA to open the Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament on March 10.
