Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif. – Penn Softball suffered two a pair of losses on day two of the 2022 Judi Garman Classic hosted by Cal State-Fullerton. The Quakers were run-ruled in game one against Cal Poly, 8-0 and then fell 4-1 to Weber State in the night cap.
Julia Longo recorded her 100th career strikeout for the first out in the bottom of the first inning against Weber State.
Game 1 – Cal Poly 8, Penn 0 (5 innings)
Cal Poly struck first in the bottom of the first inning plating three runs. A hit by pitch with one out sent home the first run. Cal Poly's third baseman hit a two-run base hit to right to give the designated home team an early 3-0 lead.
The Mustangs capitalized on an infield error in the bottom of the third to go up 4-0. One batter later, a base hit through the left side of the infield scored two runs giving them a 6-0 lead.
The Red and Blue threatened in the top of the fourth as they recorded three base hits including two with two outs but were unable to score in the inning.
Penn was unable to get an out in the bottom of the fifth inning as a double to left field drove in the winning runs for Cal Poly.
The Quakers' hitters scattered four hits across five innings including three in the top of the fourth.
Game 2 – Weber State 4, Penn 1
With the first out of the bottom of the first Longo recorded her 100th career strikeout in a Penn uniform.
Weber State got on the board first as they plated two runs on back-to-back sac flies to left field giving them a 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Quakers threatened in the top of the fifth as
Julia Schneider reached on an error at third and then
Emma Nedley moved her over to third on a base hit and then stole second but couldn't advance the runners.
A base hit up the middle for Weber State in the bottom of the sixth plated another pair of runs giving them a 4-0 lead.
Sammy Fenton led off the top of the seventh with a base hit and
Julia Mortimer moved her over to third on a double off the left field fence to start a rally for Penn. With two outs in the inning, Nedley drove in Fenton from third on a base hit off the WSU pitcher to prevent a second-straight shutout.
The Quakers will close out the 2022 Judi Garman Classic with a 2:15 p.m. ET first pitch against Utah on Sunday.
They will then play two at Cal Poly (March 9) before making the trip to Los Angeles for a pair of games at UCLA against Loyola Marymount and UCLA on March 10.
