Softball Drops 13-3 Contest to Utah on Sunday

Box Score FULLERTON, Calif. – Penn Softball dropped a tough match up against a PAC-12 team in the Utah Utes. The Quakers were run-ruled in their final game of the 2022 Judi Garman Classic hosted by and at Cal State – Fullerton, Calif.

Utah 13, Penn 3 (5 innings)
Utah struck first as they hit a 2 RBI base hit up the middle to go up 2-0 in the first inning.

Bella Fiorentino cut the deficit in half as she belted on over the center field fence for her second home run of the season in the bottom half of the inning.

Emma Nedley followed suite as she sent a 2-1 count over the left field wall to tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second.

The Utes put up three runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-2.

The designated visitors opened the fifth inning with a solo shot to dead center making it 6-2. The game got out of hand for Penn very quickly as free bases, errors and hit by pitches allowed Utah to capitalize on Penn's miscues. One Penn recorded the final out of the fifth inning Utah had grown its lead to 13-2.

Nedley opened the bottom half of the fifth with a double and then moved up on a wild pitch. She then came round to score on another wild pitch but all Penn can manage is the one run in the seventh.

The Quakers will play Boston University and Cal State-Fullerton on Tuesday before heading to Cal Poly for a double header on Wednesday. The west coast trip for Penn will end in Los Angeles for a pair of games at UCLA against Loyola Marymount and UCLA on March 10.
