Fiorentino Named Ivy League Softball Pitcher of the Week

PHILADELPHIA – The Ivy League announced its weekly softball honors on Monday afternoon. The University of Pennsylvania Softball team's junior pitcher Bella Fiorentino was named Pitcher of the Week. Sophomore outfielder Julia Mortimer and junior catcher Sarah Schneider were named to the leagues Honor Roll for games played last week.

Columbia's Abby Stuart was named Player of the Week and Yale's Maddie Latta earned Rookie of the Week honors as announced the by the league office on Monday.

Fiorentino becomes the fourth Penn softball player to earn Ivy weekly honors joining S. Schneider (Player - 3/21/22), Dana Anderson (Rookie – 2/28/22), and Payton Bean (Pitcher – 2/28/22).

Bella Fiorentino went the distance as she posted a complete game shutout in Penn's 3-0 series finale victory at Brown on Sunday to improve to 2-2 on the season. In seven innings pitched, she allowed just two hits while striking out five and walking three. She did not allow a hit for the first 4.1 innings. The California native shaved off .051 points off her opponent's batting average from a .376 before Sunday's win to a .325 after the two-hit shutout. In the victory, she set season highs in innings pitched (7.0), strikeouts (5), and hits (low)(2). The complete-game shutout was her first career shutout and complete game.

Sarah Schneider had a pair of two-hit games as she helped Penn go 2-1 on the weekend to earn an Ivy series victory at Brown. In game one, she went 2-for-3 with one home run, a double, an RBI, and a walk as Penn won 7-2. In the final game, she went 2-for-4 with a pair of solo home runs in back-to-back at-bats. With three home runs on the weekend, she doubled her season total to six, which is good for first in the Ivy League. Schneider leads the team in runs scored (16), RBI (13), doubles (7), home runs (6), and total bases (46). She also leads the Ivy League in OPS (1.148), runs scored (16) doubles (7), and home runs (6).

Julia Mortimer went 6-for-9 on the weekend with 2 RBI, HR, BB, and three runs scored. In Penn's 7-2 victory over Brown, she went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, and two runs scored. She improved her hit streak to seven games spanning 11 days. Her solo shot in the final game against Brown proved to be the game-winning run as Penn won 3-0. On the season, she is second on the team with eight runs scored, three doubles, and is third on the team with 20 hits.

The Red and Blue are back in action this week as they host Lehigh on Wednesday for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 3 p.m. Next weekend, Penn welcomes Cornell to Philadelphia for a three-game series with the Big Red. All five games next week will be played at Penn Park.
