Baseball Kicks Off 2022 Campaign Against Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Pennsylvania baseball team opens the 2022 season this weekend with a three-game series against SEC member Texas A&M. Friday's game marks the first in a 12-game stretch that will include a 10-day trip through South Carolina where the Quakers will play nine games in all against Wofford (four), College of Charleston (two), and Winthrop (three).

The Quakers will make their first trip to the Lone Star State since kicking off the 2014 season against Dallas Baptist. In all, Penn will start the season with 17 consecutive nonconference games before kicking off the Ivy League campaign at home against Columbia, the team picked to finish just ahead of them in the league's pre-season poll, on Saturday, March 26.

Scouting Texas A&M
The Aggies opened their 2022 campaign last weekend outscoring Fordham 23-8 while sweeping the three-game series, then knocked off Lamar, 9-3, on Tuesday night.
 
Trevor Werner went 6-for-12 during the Fordham sweep with four extra-base hits, four runs scored and six RBI, Brett Minnich went 3-for-8 with three runs scored and four RBI, and Logan Britt went 4-for-12 with four runs scored and four RBI.
 
Against Lamar, Minnich went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Ryan Targac went 2-for-4 with a home run, and Austin Bost went 3-for-5 with an RBI.
 
On the mound, starters Micah Dallas and Nathan Dettmer each went at least six innings allowing a lone earned run while striking out at least five and not yielding a single walk against Fordham.
 
This weekend marks the first-ever series between the Quakers and the Aggies.

NEWS AND NOTES: PENN
*The Quakers return three of their top four hitters in terms of batting average and OPS and eight of their top nine pitchers, in terms of both ERA and WHIP, from 2021. Wyatt Henseler hit .365 and posted a .990 OPS, with eight of his 19 hits going for extra bases. On the mound, Brendan Bean didn't allow a single earned run in 11.1 innings over seven appearances last year. Owen Coady and Danny Heintz struck out a combined 32 batters in just 22.1 innings,

*Penn's last opening day win came in 2020, when it knocked off Kennesaw State, 10-7. Then-sophomore Craig Larsen reached base four times and scored three runs and Bean struck out four batters over the final two innings to lock down the save.
 
*Penn will be led by a quintet of senior captains this season: Tommy Courtney, Kevin Eaise, Andrew Hernandez, Larsen, and Joe Miller

*24 Quakers competed for 15 different teams in 10 different states during the Summer of 2021. Among other notable achievements, Jackson Appel won the Futures League Defensive Player of the Year, Owen Coady was a Cape Cod League All-Star, and Joe Miller was named the Coastal Plains League's Pitcher of the Year.
