The Series with Brown
The Quakers are meeting the Bears for the 44th time in program history on Saturday, owning a 32-8-3 all-time series record. Penn enters the game riding a 10-game winning streak against Brown that dates to 2011; the Quakers have only loss to them once in the last 15 years. The matchup at Ellen Vagelos Field will be the first since 2018, playing the last two times in Providence due to the pandemic. Penn won the last outing on its home turf in 2018, 1-0, with the finish coming just three minutes into the game by Rachel Mirkin.
Â
Last Time We Met
The past three meetings have only been decided by one goal, including last season in Rhode Island with Penn taking a 3-2 decision. The Quakers put two away in the opening five minutes from
Meghan Ward and
Julia Russo to give Penn a comfortable cushion until the fourth quarter.
Courtney Kenah added an insurance goal to start the final frame, which was needed after the Bears scored two in the closing 10 minutes. Brown edged out the Quakers in shots, 18-15, but Penn's defense made an impressive nine saves to hold off the Bears' late push.
Â
About The Bears
Brown had a strong start to its 2022 slate, opening the year with a five-game winning streak in non-conference play that included an overtime victory against then-No. 24 Miami (Ohio), 3-2. The Bears enter this weekend's matchup 1-2 in Ivy League play, falling to Yale and Columbia in overtime, 3-2. Lexi Pellegrino has been the difference maker on offense all season, sporting 23 points off an Ivy-leading 10 goals and three assists. Back in the cage, Jodie Brine has tended for nearly every minute of the season, making 44 saves for a 1.43 goals-against average and eight victories.
Â
Penn's Last Time Out
The Quakers secured their third shutout victory of the year last Friday, extending their winning streak against Cornell to seven games with a 2-0 decision in Ithaca. Senior captains
Gracyn Banks and Ward each found the back of the cage for Penn in the second half. Banks scored her goal early in the third quarter on a penalty stroke, while Ward put the insurance goal in the final frame off a pass from
Sophie Freedman. Sophomore
Frederique Wollaert earned her third win in the cage this season, making four saves in 60 minutes of work.
