Softball Announces Class of 2024

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania's head softball coach, Leslie King, has announced the addition of seven women who will join the program as members of the Class of 2024. Dana Anderson, Brianna Brown, Sammy Fenton, Jillian Kuntze, Julia Mortimer, Katie Reagan and Olivia Szewczyk will begin play as freshmen in the spring of 2021.

"I am very excited about our incoming freshman class of seven," said King. "It is a well-balanced class with a huge amount of athleticism. We have pitching, catching, defense, power and speed all coming in to solidify our team. This class is ready to contribute immediately!"
 
Dana Anderson
Position: INF
Height: 5'10"
Archbishop Alter/Miamisburg, Ohio
High School: Four-year letter winner … Two-time team captain … Three-time first-team All-Greater Catholic League (2017, 2018, 2019) … Two-time honorable mention all-state (2018, 2019) … Named 2019 Greater Catholic League Player of the Year … Two-time team Most Valuable Player (2018, 2019) … Also played basketball and volleyball … Archbishop Alter's Knight Award recipient … National Honor Society member.
Personal: Daughter of Katherine and Joel Anderson … Will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Coach King Says: "Dana is a tall, strong first baseman and hitter. She has really good power and can fill that role for us, plus her positive attitude is contagious."
 
Brianna Brown
Position: OF
Height: 5'7"
Marist/Tinley Park, Ill.
High School: Four-year letter winner … 2020 team captain … In 2019, helped lead Marist to regional, sectional and super-sectional championships, going 36-4 overall … In 2017, helped lead Marist to regional, sectional and super-sectional titles with a 25-9 record … 2019 Beverley Review All-Area … 2018 Honorable Mention Southtown All-Area … Winner of the 2019 Redhawk Award at Marist … A black belt in taekwondo … National Honor Society member … Spanish National Honor Society member.
Personal: Daughter of Pandora and Jeffrey Brown … Mother played volleyball at Eastern Illinois … Aunt, Kelly Keyes, played softball at Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri State … Will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Coach King Says: "Brianna is a triple threat from the left side and an outstanding defensive outfielder. We are looking forward to adding her speed on our team."
 
Sammy Fenton
Position: INF
Height: 5'6"
Foothill Technology/Ventura, Calif.
High School: Four-year letter winner in both softball and golf … 2020 softball team captain … A part of four straight league championships in golf (2016-19) … Named the 2020 Ventura County Athlete of the Year … 2019 first-team All-Tri-County Athletic Association (TCAA) in softball … 2018 second-team All-TCAA in softball … Four-time first-team All-TCAA in golf (2016-19) … Named Summa Cum Laude (GPA of 4.40 or higher) … Served as a freshman mentor.
Personal: Daughter of Lynette and Scott Fenton … Will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Coach King Says: "Sammy is a really athletic shortstop with great fundamentals. She is going to give us needed depth in our middle infield."
 
Jillian Kuntze
Position: C
Height: 5'9"
Cypress Bay/Weston, Fla.
High School: Four-year letter winner … 2020 team captain … Helped lead Cypress Bay to a 2018 district championship … Named Miracle Sports' 2018 Class 9A second-team All-State … Second-team All-Broward County in 2018, honorable mention in 2019 … Won the 2020 Scholar Athlete Award … Earned Cypress Bay's 2020 Outstanding Leader Award … Served as junior ROTC company commander … Active member of Habitat for Humanity.
Personal: Daughter of Kelly and Todd Kuntze … Will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Coach King Says: "Jillian is a strong, athletic catcher with a very good bat. She has the ability to make a big impact on our team and in the league."
 
Julia Mortimer
Position: OF
Height: 5'10"
Santa Margarita Catholic/Coto De Caza, Calif.
High School: Four-year letter winner … Two-time team captain … 2020 team started 8-0 before season was cancelled due to nationwide COVID-19 outbreak … Helped lead Santa Margarita Catholic to a 2019 Trinity League title with a record of 25-4 … 2019 honorable mention All-Trinity League … 2018 Scholar Athlete of the Year … 2017 second-team All-Trinity League and Santa Margarita Catholic Rookie of the Year … Named First Honor Roll all four years … Two-year member of the California Scholarship Federation … Staff writer for the school newspaper (The Eagle Eye).
Personal: Daughter of Dana and Mark Mortimer … High school softball teammate with current Penn softball player Bella Fiorentino '23 … Will enroll in the Wharton School of Business.
Coach King Says: "Julia is a very good outfielder and an even better hitter. She brings a very good maturity level as a person and a ballplayer."
 
Katie Reagan
Position: UTIL
Height: 5'7"
Elizabeth Seton/Glenn Dale, Md.
High School: Four-year letter winner in softball and volleyball and three-year letter winner in basketball … Team captain for volleyball and basketball … Helped lead softball team to two Inter-Ac titles (2017, 2018) while attending Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in the Philadelphia, region … Won a Pennsylvania Independent School Athletic Association (PAISAA) state championship with SCHA in 2018 … Two-time first-team All-Inter-Ac (2017, 2018) … Coaches award winner in volleyball (2018), basketball (2017, 2019) and softball (2018) … Interned at NASA … Johanna Sigmund Scholarship recipient for leadership, spirit, athleticism and compassion for others.
Personal: Daughter of Carrie and John Reagan … Mother played softball at the University of Akron … Father played football at Syracuse University and is currently the offensive line coach at the University of Maryland after serving as offensive coordinator and the Clarence S. Rockwell, VMD Quarterbacks Coach at Penn from 2015-18 (winning Ivy titles with the Quakers in 2015 and 2016)  … Father also coached the tight ends at Penn in 1997 … Will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Coach King Says: "Katie is going to be a nice addition to our team. She can play the corners and hit with power, and it's always nice to add a local player!"
 
Olivia Szewczyk

High School: Four-year letter winner … 2020 team captain … Helped lead Mount Carmel to a 2018 district championship … Helped Mount Carmel to district and state championships in 2017 … National Honor Society officer … Principal's Honor Roll (2015-20) … National Latin Exam Summa Cum Laude … Active volunteer in the National Children's Cancer Society and Habitat for Humanity.
Personal: Daughter of Crystal and Craig Szewczyk … Will enroll in the College of Arts and Sciences.
Coach King Says: "Liv is a strong pitcher with great movement. We are excited to add her to our staff. She also will surprise people with her bat."
