JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Skyla Wilson, Cecil Ene, Nia Akins and Uchechi Nwogwugwu shattered the women's 4x400 program record to secure a qualifying spot to the NCAA Championships on Saturday, the final day of the NCAA East Preliminary at Hodges Stadium on the campus of North Florida.
The quartet crossed the line in 3:32.12, beating the likes of Miami, Florida, Clemson, LSU, Purdue, Connecticut, Ohio State, Pitt, Maryland and a slew of others to snatch a spot in Austin, Texas as one of the top-24 groups in the nation. Nwogwugwu, who also qualified individually in the 400, steamrolled past Clemson's anchor down the homestretch to finish third in an extraordinarily tough heat; Nwogwugwu ran a 51.50 final lap, a time that would shatter her program record in the 400.
This relay group is the first in program history to advance to nationals.
Saturday capped a week that advanced 10 athletes across nine events to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas in two weeks, the most in program history, including six in women's competition, another record, and three men, matching the all-time record. Heading to Austin on the women's side are: Akins (800), Ashley Anumba (discus), Mayyi Mahama (hammer), Anna Peyton Malizia (high jump), Nwogwugwu (400) and the 4x400, while Sean Clarke (pole vault), Colin Daly (steeplechase) and freshman Marc Minichello (javelin) qualified from the men's team.
The shot put opened Saturday's events for the Quakers, with Cameron Landis placing 40th with a mark of 16.76m (55-0) and Maura Kimmel finishing 41st in women's competition (14.74m/48-4.5).
Cristian Constantin put up a big mark on his second attempt in the triple jump, reaching out to 15.54m (51-0), but just missed qualification with a 17th-place finish. The mark is just a hair off of his PR of 15.56m set at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships earlier this month.
