PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (14-11, 5-4 Ivy) heads back on the road this weekend, this time for a three-game series against Cornell (5-21, 2-4 Ivy). Penn will play a doubleheader against the Big Red on Saturday (12:30 p.m.) before a single game on Sunday wraps up the series.
Previewing Penn
The Quakers have won three straight games which includes taking games two and three against the 2018 co-champion Dartmouth last week. Freshman
Julia Longo threw her second complete game to take game two and then the Red and Blue offense exploded for 17 runs in the series finale to win game three.
Penn went on to defeat Villanova on Wednesday, 11-4, behind another strong offensive performance.
The Penn offense has hit its stride over the last month. After scoring five runs just three times in their first 17 games, the Red and Blue have scored 10 or more runs three times in their last eight. The Quakers are the only team hitting above .300 in the Ivy League this season, entering the weekend with a .310 team average. Their .310 average ranks 29th in the country.
The Quaker offense leads the Ancient Eight in doubles (41). Behind
Sarah Cwiertnia's 0.38 doubles per game – which ranks 26th in the nation – Penn as a team is tied for 29th (1.64).
In the circle,
Tabitha Dyer leads the Ivy League in ERA (2.11) and is holding opposing batters to a .209 average at the plate. The sophomore lefty is 6-1 this season.
The Quakers will look to get off to a fast start this weekend as they look to take a spot atop the Ivy League. Penn has lost the opening games in its three Ivy League series' this season, but have won games two and three in its last two.

After taking two of three games against Brown in its opening weekend of Ivy League play, Cornell was swept last week by Yale. However, Big Red freshman Allison Kerce won the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week after batting .533 in five games with two home runs.
