PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania softball team (5-5) returns home from Florida after a successful stay in Clearwater over spring break. The Quakers will play its home opener at Penn Park in a mid-week double-header against Lafayette on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).
Previewing Penn
Penn's 5-5 mark through ten games is its best since 2016. With impressive wins over Penn State and 2018 NCAA qualifier Bethune-Cooman, the Red and Blue carry some momentum before Ivy League play begins this weekend.
Leading the way in the circle for Penn has been
Tabitha Dyer. The sophomore lefty currently leads the nation with a 0.00 ERA. Dyer has thrown three straight complete games - including a complete-game shutout – on her way to back-to-back Ivy League Pitcher of the Week honors.
Jennifer Brann has been impressive as well. The junior captain has thrown two complete games and leads the pitching staff in strikeouts with 14. She has a 2.00 ERA and has allowed just four runs in her two wins in the circle.
At the plate,
Sarah Cwiertnia has been the most consistent bat for the Red and Blue. The senior first-baseman has tallied eleven hits which leads the team. Cwiertnia's lead-off double in the bottom of the seventh against Penn State helped spark the Quakers' comeback win against the Nittany Lions.
Batting in the fifth spot,
Lucy Yang has added power to the lineup. The sophomore has picked up where she left off after her rookie season as she leads the Quakers in home runs (2) and RBI (7).
