Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team suffered a 3-2 loss to the Cornell Big Red on Friday night as they returned home for the first time since September 14th.
The return home started off in spectacular fashion, with the Quakers rolling in the first two sets. The Quakers dominated in the first set, winning 25-15 behind 18 kills from six different players, including five from
Margaret Planek.
The second set proved to be more of the same, with the Quakers continuing their strong play in a 25-20 victory. The Quakers attack was even more efficient, notching a team hitting percentage of .548 and getting four kills each from Planek,
Parker Jones,
Daniela Fornaciari and
Autumn Leak.
The Big Red put the pressure on the Quakers in the third, but nevertheless trailed 18-15 as the set was winding down. However, the Big Red put on strong comeback attempt, outscoring the Quakers 10-4 to pick up a 25-22 victory.
Momentum swung further to Cornell's side in the fourth, behind a dominant 25-16 victory. Penn was limited to just four kills and held in check by an energized Big Red group. That energy carried into the fifth set, with the Big Red holding off a late comeback attempt by Penn to win 15-10.
Penn continues their four-game homestand on Saturday afternoon as they face off against Columbia at 5 p.m. and attempting to record their first Ivy League win of the season.
