Men's Soccer Continues Ivy Play at Columbia Sunday

PHILADELPHIA - Business was taken care of by the University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team in its Ivy League opener, and now the Quakers will test their mettle in conference play on the road against a fellow 1-0 team: Columbia. Kick off for Penn and the Lions will take place on a rare Sunday matinee in New York City on Oct. 13 at 1 p.m.

MATCH DAY 9 - Penn (4-3-1, 1-0 Ivy League) at Columbia (3-4-2, 1-0 Ivy League)
Sunday, Oct. 13 | 1:00 p.m. | New York, N.Y. | Live Stats | ESPN+

Series Information
Columbia leads 34-33-6 | Last meeting: 2018 (Columbia, 2-0)

Penn is seeking its first win over the Lions since 2011 as Columbia has won six straight in the series and seven of the last eight, with a tie in 2013. Last year, the Quakers dropped a 2-0 decision at home to Columbia, while the last meeting between the two in the Big Apple featured a ranked Columbia side winning 3-0. Penn is on the hunt for its first goal in the series since 2016.

Stitz Scores
Sophomore Ben Stitz featured the best performance in his career at Penn in last weekend's game vs. Cornell, scoring his first collegiate goal while also assisting on the game-winner. Stitz took no time to set the tone early, launching a shot just under the crossbar in the fifth minute to put Penn up 1-0. With Penn leading 2-1 in the second half, he found an angling Joey Bhangdia in the box who netted a goal off the far post as the Quakers would go ahead to win 3-2.

Bartel Breaks Through
Stitz wasn't the only Quaker to score his first collegiate goal against the Big Red, as senior captain Brandon Bartel broke through with a penalty kick goal in the 19th minute to break a 1-1 tie. Bartel has four points on the season with his goal and two assists.

Bhangdia's Boot
Joey Bhangdia has put together a standout junior season so far, leading both the team and the Ivy League with five goals on the year, including three game-winners. Bhangdia has scored in goal in five of his seven starts this year.

Keepin' it Clean
Penn ranks 19th nationally and leads the Ivy League averaging just over 10 fouls per game, limiting set piece opportunities for its opponents.

Making Strides
The Quakers have nine goals in eight games this year. Last year, it took Penn 14 games to reach the nine-goal threshold.

Offensive Explosion
The Quakers scored three goals in a single game in their 3-2 win over Cornell last weekend for the first time since last season's 3-2 overtime win over Monmouth. It was Penn's first three-goal performance in both an Ivy League and regulation game since a 3-0 win over Harvard in 2017.

Seeking Momentum
Off to a 1-0 start in Ivy League play for the first time since 2016, Penn hopes to keep the wins rolling for its first 2-0 start in conference play since 2011.

Scouting the Lions
Columbia enters Sunday's contest with a losing record overall of 3-4-2, but started off Ivy League play on the right foot with a 3-2 victory over Brown last weekend. Most recently the Lions dropped a 2-1 midweek battle at Binghamton on Tuesday. Both Penn and Columbia have played a ranked St. John's squad this season, with the Quakers getting narrowly edged, 1-0, while the Lions dropped a 5-1 decision to the Red Storm. Offensively, John Denis, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Week, leads Columbia with five goals and three assists on the year, while Sebastian Gunbeyi, Uri Zeitz and Danny Laranetto have all scored multiple times this season. The Lions have given up five more goals than they've scored themselves this season, with Michael Collodi sporting a 1.92 GAA in between the pipes.
