Swimming and Diving Completes Sweep of West Chester

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania swimming and diving program completed a sweep over West Chester on Saturday to close out the 2018-19 dual meet season.

The men's team got off to a quick start, winning the first 12 events to cruise to a 196-100 victory. The women showed off their young depth, with six athletes winning eight events to earn a 173-126 victory.

NEWS AND NOTES

*The Quakers won 14 of 16 events for the second time this season.

*Eight different student athletes tallied an individual win on the day for Penn.

*Penn closes out the dual/tri meet season with an 8-2 record, its best finish sine 2015-16.

*Mark Andrew's victory in the 100 back (51.92) was the fifth different individual event Andrew has won this season.

*Sophomore Kenan Dols earned his first individual victory of the season, taking first in the 200 fly (1:54.82)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Penn got off to a hot start and never looked back, as the Quakers won the first 12 events to cruse to their eighth victory of the season, taking down the Golden Rams of West Chester.

The Red and Blue continued to dominate the medley relay events, as a team of Andrew, Colin McHugh, Sean Lee, and Nathaniel Cunnan started off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:32.36).

Will Thomas continued the Quakers' momentum as he earned his first victory of the day in the 1,000 free (9:33.56). Andrew continued to build on Penn's hot start as he won the 100 back (51.92).

Colin McHugh followed with his first victory of the day, winning the 100 breast (57.92). Dols then won his first individual event of the season as he took first in the 200 fly (1:54.82).

Andrew Bologna kept Penn's streak going as he took first in the 1-meter (294.54) in his final dual-meet with the Red and Blue.

Sandwiching Bologna's victory in the 1-meter dive were a pair of wins for Lee in the 50 (20.84) and 100 free (46.82).

Zach Althoff (1:56.65) and Andrew (1:57.59) finished first and second in the 200 back, giving Penn its 11th straight victory to start the meet. Matthew Haigh got in on the action, winning the 500 free (4:43.20) to make it 12 straight for the Quakers.

Following  West Chester victory in the 100 fly, freshman James Hopper capped off a sweep of the diving events with a first-place finish in the 3-meter (305.55).

Thomas ended the meet just as he started it, with a victory in the 200 IM (1:56.51) to cap off an incredible day for the Quakers.
 
PENN WOMEN
NEWS AND NOTES

*Six different athletes combined for eight total individual victories for the Quakers.

*Juliette Pozzuoli swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, the first Penn diver to win both events in a single meet this season.

*Three of Penn's eight victories came from freshman swimmers, Tara Larusso (200 back – 1:55.80), Hannah Kannan (100 back – 57.06), and Catherine Buroker (500 free – 5:03.58).

*The Quakers posted four 1-2-3 finishes on the day – in the 100 back, 200 fly, 200 back, and 500 free.

*Serena Xue won both the 100 and 200 breast in the same meet for the _ time this season.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Penn women closed out the dual season on a positive note, using four 1-2-3 finishes to top the Golden Rams. Katie Kiely started the day for the Quakers with a second-place finish in the 1,000 free (10:25.80). Larusso followed with a second-place finish of her own in the 200 free (1:55.80).

Larusso earned Penn's first victory of the day, taking first in the 200 back (2:02.99). Kannan finished second in the 200 back (2:04.05) before winning the 100 back (57.06) later in the day. Kannan took second again, finishing the 100 fly with a time of 56.55.

Libby Jardeleza (59.17) and Vicky Wong (59.69) took second and third, respectively, in the 100 back.  Serena Xue took a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 (1:06.92) and 200 breast (2:22.23).

Juliette Pozzuoli became the first Penn diver to win both diving events in a single meet this season, with a pair of first place finishes in the 1-meter (211.05) and the 3-meter (264.45). Freshman Caroline Dobbs took second in the 3-meter (203.63).

Joanne Fu led the charge in the Quakers third 1-2-3 sweep of the night, this time in the 200 fly. She took the top spot after finishing in 2:06.88. Freshman Andie Myers (2:08.06) and Anna Newnam (2:08.27) took the next two spots under Fu.

Catherine Buroker closed out a positive meet for Penn with a first-place finish in the 500 free (5:03.58). Grace Giddings (5:03.58) and Katie Kiely (5:09.61) finished second and third to give the Quakers their fourth 1-2-3 finish of the day.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
Penn will immediately begin preparations for the Ivy League Championships coming on the horizon. The women will compete first from February 20-23, while the men will compete from February 27 to March 2. Both meets will take place in Princeton, N.J.
