PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Pennsylvania gymnastics team jumps back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. on the road in New Haven, Conn. to compete against Ivy League foe Yale.
The meet with Yale is the first dual meet of the season for the Quakers, who opened the year with a quad meet at Maryland last Sunday. Penn finished third with a combined score of 190.550, behind the host Terps and West Chester and ahead of Cortland, but displayed some brilliant performances nevertheless.
Caroline Moore led the way for the Quakers at Maryland, overwhelming the judges with a 9.800 on beam to win the event. Her performance, along with freshman Natalie Yang's 9.775, guided Penn to a 48.500 overall score on the beam, the highest of any team. Yang, who was making her collegiate debut, matched the second-highest score of the field in that rotation. All six competing Quakers delivered scores of at least 9.500 as Nicole Swirbalus and Darcy Matsuda finished with 9.675's, Lauren Joost, another freshman, scored a 9.575 to round out the five scorers, while Natalie Borden also recorded a 9.500.
The young talent shined through all afternoon as freshman Ava Caravela led the way on the vault with a 9.725, helping Penn to a score of 48.025 in the event. The Red and Blue combined to score 47.075 on the floor and 46.950 on bars, despite a scintillating 9.700 from Allison Frommer.
