PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania baseball program concludes the 2018 campaign with a three-game stretch at Yale this weekend, facing off with the Bulldogs for the first time since falling to them in last year's Ivy League Championship Series. While the matchups will have little real impact on the outcome of the league's final standings -- a Penn sweep might threaten Yale serving as the home team in the Title Series -- the Quakers enter with a chip on their shoulder following a season of close calls and tight games, including six losses/ties coming by two runs or less.

After over a week off due to finals, Penn proved it still hasn't lost a step Wednesday afternoon at Villanova, dominating the Wildcats in a 7-1 decision that featured high offensive production and an inning from almost the entire bullpen. Heading into the Yale series, freshman Eduardo Malinowski continues to impress behind a brilliant rookie campaign, carrying a nine-game hit streak and the league's top batting average (.353 BA) into the three-game stretch. Juniors Matt McGeagh and Sean Phelan have also maintained solid production all year, with the former topping the league in RBIs (41) and slugging percentage (.531). Further, the dynamic "small ball" approach of sophomore Chris Adams and senior Andrew Murnane has played a key role in the Quakers' offense as of late, paving the way for RBIs behind critical walks and well-timed singles.

Meanwhile, the pitching staff has evolved into a dangerous group when all three primary starters -- senior Gabe Kleiman and the sophomore duo of Mitchell Holcomb and Christian Scafidi -- are showcasing pinpoint command and unmatched speed. Supported by a eight-game bullpen chalk full of experienced arms, the Quakers have proven difficult to score against late in the season. In Wednesday's victory at Villanova, the bullpen managed the entirety of the game with just two hits, as six total pitchers tossed a near-perfect outing.

SCOUTING YALE
Within the Ivy League, the Bulldogs have dominated with little exception, winning every series save one (Columbia) and sweeping three in the process (Cornell, Princeton & Brown). Currently, Yale's riding a four-game win streak after taking down Quinnipiac last Tuesday and Princeton the weekend prior. Offensively, the team's top five batters all hit above .295 while three sport averages at .316 or better. Simon Whiteman (.323 BA) leads the group of talented hitters, as he combines with Griffin Dey (.320) for 63 RBIs on 97 hits; Teddy Hague and Tim DeGraw assist with a solid on-base percentages (both above .390) as well, compiling a joint 53 runs scored on the year.

As for Yale's pitching rotation, the group boasts a trio of starters -- RHP Scott Politz, RHP Eric Brodkowitz and LHP Kumar Nambiar -- that combine for 30 of the team's 38 starts, racking up 16 victories along the way. Similar to Penn, primary relief comes from a slew of different pitchers out of the bullpen, with right-handers Tyler Sapsford and Benny Wanger leading the group behind at least 19.0 innings apiece.
