PHILADELPHIA - One week removed from the season-opening series at Northwestern State, the University of Pennsylvania baseball program readies for its annual spring break road trip, this year traveling to the state of South Carolina for an eight-game slate over the course of 10 days. The Quakers open with a three-game series against Wofford, make a short trip to Furman for a pair of midweek matchups and wrap up the journey with another trio of games versus USC Upstate the following weekend.
Penn received mixed results last weekend against Northwestern State, as each game played out completely different from the other two. The first, an extra-innings affair, featured a pitcher's duel with little offense on either side; the second had the Quakers struggling to find traction in any facet of the game; meanwhile, the third showcased the Red and Blue hitting on all cylinders, as strong pitching and consistent offense put the Demons away. Despite finishing 1-2, ace pitching and timely hitting point to an evolving squad poised to make an impact through the rest of the non-conference schedule and into Ivy League play.
For the Wofford series, the Quakers will look to a trio off the rotation who all saw significant time on the road against Northwestern State. Kleiman, the veteran senior, currently slots in for Friday's opener after a strong six innings versus the Demons, allowing just one run before turning the game over to the bullpen. Speaking of the game one bullpen, Holcomb will take the mound in the Sunday matchup, as his five innings and nine strikeouts promoted the sophomore into a weekend role. Scafidi will look for redemption after battling a tough order in Northwestern State's second matchup, holding onto his start in Saturday's game versus Wofford.
SCOUTING WOFFORD
The Terriers enter the series with Penn sitting at 3-5, including two losses to high-end SEC programs Kentucky and Georgia, and hobble into the opening game on a two-game losing streak (at Georgia, 0-5; vs. Presbyterian College, 2-9). Offensively, the group has been headlined by a pair of seniors - Mack Nathanson (.385) and McClain Bradley (.333) - who combine for 20 hits, 32 RBIs, three doubles and three home runs already on the year.
As for the pitching staff, Wofford's Scott has tallied 20 strikeouts in his three appearance (two starts), but has been vulnerable to the big bats, surrendering four homers. Higgenbotham works clean innings, having thrown 13.0 frames with 11 strikeouts and just four runs, while Grant has tossed nearly 10 full innings with only three runs and eight strikeouts. Both Scott and Higgenbotham are looking for their second wins on the season while Grant still pursues his first.
