Volleyball Welcomes Back '83 and '03 Teams, Host Columbia, Cornell at Palestra

PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania volleyball team (3-13, 0-5 Ivy) is back in The Palestra this weekend when it hosts Columbia on Friday (7 p.m.) and Cornell on Saturday (5 p.m.). The Quakers will "Dig Pink" on Friday while helping to raise funds in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month. On Saturday, the Ivy League champion 1983 and 2003 teams will return to The Palestra and be honored at halftime.

Previewing Penn

* The Quakers are looking for their first Ivy win. They split with Cornell and swept Columbia last season. 

* Head coach Iain Braddak will go up against Columbia for the first time. Braddak served as an assistant for the Lions in 2017 prior to arriving at Penn. 

* All five of Parker Jones' double-doubles this season have come at home at The Palestra. She has double-doubles in five of the team's seven home matches. 

* Caroline Furrer ranks seventh in the Ivy League in digs. The junior captain has recorded 160 this season. 

* Madison Goldstein leads the team in kills since the beginning of Ivy League play. She is just one of three Penn attackers to record more than 100 kills on the year (122). 

Honoring the 1983 and 2003 Teams

Celebrating the 35th anniversary of its Ivy League championship, the 1983 team finished the year with a 22-15 record. The Red and Blue were perfect in Ivy League play going 7-0 on their way to Penn's second Ivy League title. Coming back from the 1983 team will be Sue Goetinck Ambrose, Sandy Schuhart Chockla, Kari Sommerstad Costanzo, Megan Roth-Ueno, Gail Silberthau Silverman, Fu-Chin Lee Mundt, Suzie Schuman Engel, and Alexa Colgrove Curtis. 

The 2003 team is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its Ivy League title. The Quakers finished with a record of 20-7, including a 13-1 record in Ivy League play capturing the program's eighth Ivy League championship. Coming back for the reunion will be Lynzy Caton Harmsen, Meredith Damore, Meghan Cleiman Schloat, Heather Janssen Diaz, Elzabeth Kwak-Hefferan, and Natalie Francis Wentworth.

* The Quakers have split each of the last four meetings with the Lions. Columbia swept in 2016 while Penn came back to sweep last season. Last year's win against Columbia at The Palestra came on senior night when the Quakers prevailed in five sets. Parker Jones led the way with 19 kills on her way to being named Ivy League Rookie of the Week for the third time.

* Emily Teehan won her second straight Ivy League Rookie of the Week selection last week. The freshman leads her team in kills with 182 which also ranks second in the conference.

* The Quakers split with The Big Red last season with both teams winning their games at home. Penn has found success against Cornell over the past decade at The Palestra, the Red and Blue have won nine of the last ten at home in the series.

* Cornell opened the season with four consecutive Ivy League victories for the first time since 2005. The Big Red posted a five-match winning streak earlier this season beginning with a win over Western Illinois on Sept. 15 and ending with a win vs. Brown on Oct. 5. It's their longest win streak since 2006.
