PHILADELPHIA - For the 28th time in history, the University of Pennsylvania men's and women's track and field programs teamed up with Ivy League compatriots Cornell to battle foes from across the pond in Oxford and Cambridge Universities in the Transatlantic Series. The Quakers and Big Red came out on top over those from the Achilles Club on a cloudy afternoon at historic Franklin Field, while several personal marks and school records came toppling down.
Arguably the highlight of the day came from pole vault, as a Quaker on both the men's and women's side notched career-best clearances and asserted themselves in the national rankings in the process. FreshmanÂ
Sean Clarke continued his early splash in the collegiate track and field world, claiming first with a mark of 5.20m, good for third all-time at Penn and currently ranking 12th in the NCAA East Region. For the women, juniorÂ
Molly Minnig cleared a height of 3.90m, the second-best performance in Penn history and 36th in the NCAA East Region.
Success in field events was a theme of the day (and season) on the women's side, as sophomoreÂ
Rachel Lee Wilson finished with a school record distance of 55.90m in the hammer throw, sitting 54th in the NCAA East Region.Â
Bianca Donadio continued to climb up the record books in the same event, tossing a distance of 47.66 for eighth-place in Penn laurels. FreshmanÂ
Maura Kimmel finished first in the discus with a toss of 44.90m, whileÂ
Isis Trotman notched second-best time in Penn history at 46.49m. BothÂ
Devinne Miller andÂ
Anna Peyton Malizia finished first in their respective events of long jump and high jump, while seniorÂ
Lisa Sesink-Clee took first in javelin.Â
For the men, joining Clarke in first place in their own field events wereÂ
Kameron Hypolite (long jump), Noah Kennedy-White (shot put/discus) andÂ
Sam Kaplan (javelin).Â
Lance Yassay,Â
Nick McGreivy andÂ
Ian Kirk all placed heights of 1.90 in the high jump. On the track, the seniors led the way asÂ
Nick Tuck clocked in at first in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 8:54.14, whileÂ
Chris Hatler finished ahead of the pack in the 1,500m at 3:48.57.Â
Jeff Wiseman (400m),Â
Aaron Groff (5,000m) andÂ
Anthony Okolo (400m hurdles) all collected second-place marks in their own events.Â
Cornell and Penn teamed up for both the men and women to win the 4x400m relay. On the women's side the Quakers claimed eight first-place marks, combining with the Big Red to defeat Achilles Club 14-5. The American squads were even more dominant for the men, winning 17-2.Â
Penn returns to action next weekend for a final tuneup before the Penn Relays Carnival, traveling the short distance for the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton on Friday, April 21.Â
