Men's Tennis Edges Harvard, 4-2

PRINCETON, N.J. – Fueled by winning a pair of tiebreakers to take the doubles point, the University of Pennslyvania’s men’s tennis team tallied a 4-2 triumph over Harvard on Sunday night. The Quakers wrap up the ECAC Championships, which were held at Princeton, with a 2-1 record (fifth place).

The Quakers had to fight and claw to record the match’s first point over the Crimson. The duos of Kyle Mautner and Matt Nardella (No. 2) and Josh Pompan and Thomas Spratt (No. 3) each pulled out tiebreakers to give Penn a 1-0 lead. In fact, neither tiebreaker ended in regulation. No. 2 doubles went all the way to 12-10, while No. 3 ended at 8-6. Pompan and Spratt improve to 9-1 as a team this season.

In singles action, it was once again Penn’s top-two leading the way. No. 61 Mautner clinched Penn’s sixth win of the spring with a 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 win over Kenny Tao (No. 1). The sophomore is now 9-1 in Penn’s top spot.

Pompan also went to three sets in the No. 2 slot, pulling out a 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 triumph over Brian Yeung. Pompan is now 7-2 in singles this spring.

Marshall Sharp notched Penn’s other win at No. 6—also in three sets. The senior registered his first victory this spring courtesy of a 3-6, 7-6, 6-2 win over Samuel Beren.
