PHILADELPHIA - Two players from the University of Pennsylvania women's volleyball team (12-11, 7-7 Ivy) earned All-Ivy status announced Thursday afternoon by the Ivy League. Freshman
Parker Jones was voted second-team All-Ivy while senior
Sydney Morton earned honorable mention. 2017 saw The Red and Blue secure their best overall record since 2013 including seven wins in conference under new head coach
Katie Schumacher-Cawley.
Jones took the Ivy League by storm in her rookie year. Behind 44 kills in her opening weekend debut, including 21 in just her second career match, Jones won the season's first Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Two weeks later, she won the award for a second time in three weeks. The Quaker freshman won rookie of the week for a third time after outstanding performances against Cornell and Columbia.
The freshman standout from Acalanes High School in Lafayette, California, lead the Ivy League in kills with 318, 200 of which came in Ivy League play, and ended second in kills per set with 3.42. She lead all rookies in both statistics. Ranking first on the team with 13 double-doubles, Jones lead The Red and Blue to their best overall record since 2013. Her team was 5-2 in conference play in matches that she had a double-double and 5-1 when she had 15 or more kills. She is the first Quaker since Alexis Genske in 2015 to be named to the All-Ivy second team.
Morton finishes her Quaker volleyball career on a high note as for the second straight year she earns honorable mention All-Ivy. The senior had 40 or more assists in 11 matches including 50 or more in three matches. She was just one of three players in the Ivy League with over 900 assists with 9.88 per set. The senior ended the year with 10 double-doubles which included a career high night against Columbia in which she had a 55-assist and 18 dig performance. Her 55 assists against Columbia were the 5
th most in any Ivy League match this season.
Coming from Atlanta, Georgia, Morton's senior year concluded with career highs in assists (909), digs (212), blocks (12), and aces (19). She ends her career with 1810 assists, 450 digs, 161 kills, and 37 service aces.
