PREVIEWING PENN
*The Quakers are coming off their best performance of the fall on Wednesday after defeating the defending CAA champions Delaware on the road 3-1. Penn's three goals marked a season-best, as
Jerel Blades,
Erumuse Momoh and
Joe Swenson all found the back of the net.
*Penn has split duties in the goal this fall between
Etan Mabourakh and
Scott Forbes. Forbes earned his first win of the season against the Blue Hens and has collected 12 saves this year, while Mabourakh owns a 1.42 GAA.
*Defensively, the newly tweaked backline including freshman
Alex Touche has buckled down of late, allowing just one goal in each game against Delaware and Cornell, helping to guide Penn to a 1-0-1 record during that stretch.
Casey Barone, Momoh,
Sam Wancowicz and
Gavin Barger have joined the rookie in defensive duties.
*Wancowicz earned two assists against the Blue Hens on Wednesday, guiding the Red and Blue to their first two goals of the contest. With a goal earlier this season at Drexel, the senior captain owns four points on the year.
*Four Quakers have started and played in every contest this fall, including Swenson, Blades, Wancowicz and
Brandon Bartel.
*Penn's last win over a ranked opponent came in 2010, a 1-0 win over No. 13 Brown. The Quakers tied No. 7 Washington to open the 2015 season, ending a nine-match losing streak to top-25 opponents.
NEWS AND NOTES: COLUMBIA
*The defending Ivy League champion Lions own a 5-1-2 overall record on the season, including a 1-0 mark in Ivy League play after dominating Brown 3-0 last weekend. Most recently, Columbia dropped its first match of the season on Tuesday at home to Pittsburgh, 1-0.
*Penn holds the slight advantage over the Lions in the all-time series, 33-32-6. Columbia has held the upper hand of late however, winning four straight over the Quakers including two victories in last season's reformatted Ivy League schedule. The Lions first defeated Penn in a heartbreaking double overtime affair at Rhodes Field before running to a convincing 3-0 win at Princeton to cap the season for the Red and Blue in November. A win over the Lions would be Penn's first since 2011.
*Columbia boasts the reigning Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year in Arthur Bosua and the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year in Vana Markarian. Bosua hasn't missed a beat in 2017, leading the squad and the Ivy League with 13 points and five goals this fall. In the cage, Dylan Castanheira has been a reliable force for the Lions, playing all 760 minutes of game action with a miniscule GAA of 0.47, having only allowed four goals this year.
